Wheeler announces decision on Facebook page

Lawrence County Chief deputy Mark Wheeler has announced he will be a candidate for County Sheriff next year. Four term sheriff Garrett Roberts has said he will not seek re-election for another term. Wheeler has made no secret that he intends to seek the office and has told friends for three years that he would be a candidate.

Several other names have been mentioned in local political circles so Wheeler is expected to have competition in both the Primary and general elections next year.

Wheeler decided now is the time to make it public.

“I would like to announce that I will be running for the office of Lawrence County Sheriff for the 2019-2022 term. I would appreciate your confidence and support in my endeavor to become your next Lawrence County Sheriff, Wheeler said in a prepared statement.

Mark Wheeler Bio

Long time sheriff's deputy Mark Wheeler will throw his hat in the ring in the Democrat Primary for Lawrence Co. Sheriff's race in May, 2018“…Just a little bit about me. I have been married to Kerry Saul Wheeler for 23 years and we have two children, Allyson and Andrew Wheeler. I was raised in Lawrence County and attended the Lawrence County School System from kindergarten through the 12th Grade graduating in 1992. After graduation, I attended Ashland Vocational and Technical School receiving a diploma in Diesel Technology in 1994. In 1996, I joined the US Army where I received training as an OH-58D(I) Armament/Missile Systems Repairer. I returned home to Lawrence County from the US Army in 1999, to raise our family here in Lawrence County.

In 2004, I was presented with the opportunity to serve the citizens of Lawrence County as a deputy sheriff. I attended the Law Enforcement Basic Training at the Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond, KY where I graduated in September 2004. I graduated as Valedictorian of my basic training class with the highest GPA and received the Recruit of Distinction Award and Academic Award. During my time at the Sheriff’s Office, I have received the Governor’s Award for Impaired Driving Enforcement and Governor’s Award for Occupant Protection Enforcement multiple times.

I currently serve as the Chief Deputy/Accreditation Manager of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office where I am the only current deputy to have graduated from Lawrence County High School and to have served in the military.”
