Cline brings back memories of 1930’s Louisa

“The Cline House “

The Wooten House (1940) Click on house to see video.

In my generation, this beautiful house was known as The Cline House, as I have many good memories of this house with my classmate Erick Cline.  I had no idea of the rich history behind it.

In 1939-1940 the house made the cut when Hollywood came to town for a movie.   We’re In The Movies – shot in Louisa, Kentucky

The movie is about a Hollywood movie scout named Gary Owens who came to town in search of local talent in Louisa, KY.

The movie was originally found in a box of an unknown lady here in Louisa around the year 2000.  It was originally on an old projection movie reel.  D.A.R. the Daughters of American Revolution ended up with it and at the time had it copied onto VHS.

Erick Cline states,

“It’s kind of funny and unexpected how this movie went viral here locally.  I’ve been in this group iMessage with Matt See, Shawn Hughes, Nick Hughes and Chad Hughes for the past 5 years.  Out of the blue Chad says something like, “Hey do you remember about 16 years ago us watching the movie made in Louisa back in 1939″.  Next thing you know he brings me the VHS owned by Lenny Collins to convert it to a digital format.  I didn’t think anything of it when I put it on YouTube but people kept asking me to show it to them, so just to make it easier, I uploaded it to YouTube in order to preserve it and give them a link to watch it.  Maybe the latest generations call it that but when I was growing up, we called it The Old Vinson Home.  I may be a little biased but I think it is the nicest house in all of Louisa.  The house most definitely ended up in the hands of some great people.  Jerry and Pat Derifield are doing a lot of excellent work to it.”

A big thanks to Lenny Collins, Chad Hughes, Erick Cline, DAR, Patty Wallace, Fred Jones and anyone else involved in preserving the history of our little town with this movie.

I asked Erick what seeing this house in the movie meant to him and he explained, “Anyone that knows me really well, knows it means a lot to me.  I have always loved the people and rich history of our small community.  I drive by the house every day and I get this little moment of an old memory every time I drive by it.”

THE CLINE HOUSE TIMELINE

  • The old Dr. Phillip G. Carter house that sits behind The Cline House on Lady Washington Street, originally sat in the same spot where The Cline House is now.  The house was moved by mules.

  • The house was built in 1928 by Wooten.

  • The Vinson Family lived there for many years.

  • After The Vinson Family, Dr. Donahoe lived there for several years.

  • In 1975, The Clines were looking at several different houses in the Tri-State area.  Mainly in Huntington, WV and the Paintsville, KY areas.  Three things brought Jack and Eunice Cline from Warfield, KY to Louisa, KY.  The Cline Brothers (John, Hub and Jack) were considered the grandfathers of coal in Eastern KY.  The first was Jack Cline wanted more privacy due to his work.  The second he was trying to find a birthday gift for his wife Eunice.  Third, they thought Louisa was a really nice community and still close to Martin Co.

  • Real estate broker Joe Young helped sell the house to The Cline’s.

  • Jack and Eunice Cline purchased the house from Dr. Donahoe in 1975 and moved in with their son Michael.

  • On January 19th, 1977, they adopted their son Erick Cline.

  • The Cline’s lived in the house from 1975 to 1995.  In 1995 The Cline’s moved to a home they also owned in Inez, KY.

  • The Cline House was sold to Dr. Lambert in 1995 in which he turned into an eye care office.

  • After two short years, The Clines moved to Lexington, KY in 1997.

  • Jack Cline passed away at the age of 82 in 2004.  Eunice is now 70 and still lives in Lexington, KY.

  • Dr. Lambert sold the house to Michael & Kelly Beck in 2012.  During this time they did some minor renovations to the house.

  • The Beck’s put the house on the market in 2014.

  • Jerry and Pat Derifield bought the house in 2015 and has been doing major renovations to the house ever since.

  • In 2017, the history of the house now continues for many generations to come.

This is a movie made in Louisa, KY back in 1939 & 1940. The movie is about a Hollywood movie scout named Gary Owens. He came to town in search of local talent in Louisa, KY. The movie was transferred from an old projection movie reel to VHS by the Daughters of American Revolution, Fred Jones & Patty Wallace in 2000.

Here’s nice note from Fred.

Mark,

The movie was on the web for all to see, you remember when I was helping Patty Wallace with DAR trying to find someone to put all the rolls of 8 mil together, they got someone in Charleston to do it I think, I know that there was more of the old film not used. I used to make the CD’s of it for the DAR to sell at SeptemberFest. I have some here one is of the Mrs. Moore with the old Library Book Mobile driving down toward Fallsburg stopping at home and the schools, on out to Webbville and around to Blaine.

You go a great job there Mark keep it up.

Fred

I watched this with my grandma Rachel Allen Meade who is 83 years old and lived most of her life in Louisa, as she sat and watched it I could see on her face lots of lost memories faded by time was coming back to her , and a child like look upon her face as she remembered how things were when she was a child , truly a beautiful moment that I will never forget

My mom was born and raised in Louisa, KY. Her name was Louise Thompson. She would now be 93. I wonder if she knew your grandmother
