The Johnson County Sheriff Department has released the names of both the deputy and the suspect who shot him, and was subsequently shot himself by other officers, from Tuesday’s night shooting exchange after a police chase that ended inside Lawrence County.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor has released in a press release statement that identified the officer injured in Tuesday night’s shooting in Lawrence County as Johnson County Sheriff deputy Dennis Hutchinson.

According to Sheriff Saylor, deputy Hutchinson suffered a gunshot related injury to his forehead. Deputy Hutchinson was taken to Pikeville Medical Center to be treated. Both Sheriff Salyor and Kentucky State Police Post 14-Ashland, Ky. public affairs officer, trooper Shane Goodall, reported that deputy Hutchinson was released from the hospital this morning and is doing well.

The suspect has been identified as Paul Wesley Tipton, 33, of Paintsville, Kentucky. Paul Tipton was shot multiple times and taken to Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa and was then soon thereafter transferred to Pikeville Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.

THE COP SHOOTER: PAUL WESLEY TIPTON.

State Route 201 was closed for about 12 hours while KSP officers investigated the incident. It has since reopened.
