Fort Gay, W. Va. — It won’t be the same as years past but at least the Tolsia Football team will get to play as the Rebels open up the 2020 season tonight in the friendly confines of Wilts Salmons Field against the Richwood Lumberjacks at 7:30.

#8 Gavin Meadows looks to make a move in a scrimmage at Van.

The Rebels return 19 starters off a team that went 7-4 in 2019 and were 10 seconds away from shocking the world before eventual state champion Wheeling Central connected on a 70 yard touchdown pass to defeat Tolsia 13-12 in the first round of the playoffs.

#1 Zack Ball races toward the end zone after catching a long pass against Van.

Tolsia played their only scrimmage last Friday on the road at Van and shutout the Bulldogs 31-0 with the defense putting on a show allowing under 100 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers as well.

On offense Junior QB Jesse Muncy accounted for two touchdowns and went 1-2 on extra point kicks, Muncy scored on a nifty 12 yard touchdown run and a 10 yard touchdown pass to Senior Tanner Copley, Senior John Wilson powered in from 2 yards out, Senior Gavin Meadows busted through for a 4 yard touchdown and Copley hit Senior Devin Stull who made an outstanding catch for a 25 yard touchdown.

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… After the way we ended last season these boys are chomping at the bit to get back out on the field, it was a tough way to end the season, I was so proud of the way we played but also dejected at the same time if that makes sense. We had the state champs beat and let it slip through our fingers.”
“… With everything going on we didn’t get going until August 17th and have only been in a pads for seven days before the scrimmage with Van so we have been going at warp speed trying to get them ready. We have told them all camp long to take everyday as it might be your last time practicing or playing because you just never know what’s going to happen, you’re not guaranteed tomorrow so give it all you today.”
“… I thought we did some good things against Van, really proud of our defense they really got after it. On offense we did some good things as well. We are going to have to get into better shape that is for sure. We cramped a lot in the scrimmage game.”
“… We are excited to get things going this season and will take it day by day and cherish every moment with these kids, you never know how fast it can be taken away.”
