The Ultimate Challenge…4-H Style Participants smile for a picture after a fun day of cooking and learning. Back row from left to right: Abe Woods, Racheal Carter, Madi Short, and Aubrey McCreary. Front row from left to right: Alyssa Preston, Emily McCreary, and Emma Salyer.

On Friday, July 14 the Lawrence County Extension Service Office hosted a cooking challenge event for 4-H aged children. What made this day the “Ultimate Challenge?” Students who participated in this event had little and even no experience in the kitchen. Their challenge was to practice and learn various techniques and skills that they could apply in the kitchen. From left to right: Alyssa Preston, Abe Woods, and Emma Salyer measure their dry ingredients. Techniques were demonstrated and explained by the Lawrence County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Alivia Faris and by Sarah- Jo Diamond the Lawrence County Extension 4-H Intern.

By the end of the session participants had not only practiced the skills of various proper measuring techniques, proper/safe knife skills, and how to read a recipe, but had successful applied them in all of their recipes.

At the beginning of the “Cooking Challenge” one of the participants said, “I don’t even know what a sifter is.” By the end of the day the same participant had not only used the sifter but was helping another participant understand how to use the sifter properly.

During the session the 4-H members had made scones, various muffins, brownies, cake, biscuits, granola bars, and cookies. Each recipe

required different techniques that the students had to practice and perform throughout the day. All of the food items were made not only successful but made very well.

All of the participants were able to submit their creations at the Lawrence County Fair. Not only did each participant enter their items in the fair but, all of them came in first place in their division. When one 4-H member saw that she had won she said, “I just can’t believe it, I had never made muffins before that day [The Cooking Challenge Day], I’m so excited!”

If you have any questions about upcoming events like these feel free to contact Alivia Faris, Lawrence County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, at (606)673-9495.

Participants came in 1st place in each of their divisions in the Lawrence County Fair.
