TAX OR NO TAX? GOVERNOR’S RACE TIGHTENS AS ELECTION DAY LOOMS

LOUISA, KY. — As the political clock ticks down some surprises may be in store in local and statewide elections tomorrow, on November 7, 2023. According to our Lazer poll which is not scientific by any means but usually is a pretty good indicator, the property tax raise of 11.4 cents on the $100 is the item of most interest by local voters.

The issue is up for public vote thanks to a group of local citizens who gathered names on petitions to force an election. The Lawrence County BOE unanimously chose to put the tax in force earlier this year. 725 votes were required of petition gatherers and they came up with over twice that amount.

Supt. Rob Fletcher has been campaigning heavily on all the school’s social media channels and school channels as well as attending public meetings touting the importance of gathering the $40 million over the next 20 years. Included in the BOE plan is a new $30 million Louisa West with $12 million earmarked for property acquisition.

The next most important issue by residents is the suddenly red hot Kentucky Governor’s race with Republican Daniel Cameron closing a 17 point gap to find himself just 2 points behind in the latest polls.

Meet Mckenzie…not much publicity on Cameron’t second wife, a school teacher and professor
Beshear has used his young family in numerous TV ads and other campaign literature.

Cameron is favored to win Lawrence County big although Beshear has been a good vote getter in the past here.

The statewide “under card” consists of potential Governor candidates including incumbent Michael Adams, Secretary of State. Chances are in Lawrence County, the Republicans have the numbers and there is not enough name recognition for cross ticket voting.

Susie Rice is running unopposed for the unexpired term of District 1 BOE member Heath Preston, who resigned and left Louisa.

Four citizens are running for unexpired terms non the Louisa City Council due to the resignations of Tom Parsons and Ashley Caudill. The council voted to appoint Coty Roe and then Keith Chaffin but two challengers are also running for the two seats. Louisa voters can choose Kala Brown or Kennedy Arrington for the council positions.

Last on the ballot is the question as to whether voters are ‘for’ or ‘against’ an 11.4 cents on the $100 property tax levied for the building of a new elementary school in Louisa and fixing up Blaine and Fallsburg schools and re-roofing LMS.

Neither county clerk Chris Jobe nor election specialist Crystal Smith could be reached for comment about the turnout for early voting which ended Saturday.  Try to run one of them down asap.

Vote for Andy and we need a new school and roof plus new buses.
I still live in my parents basement so it won’t cost me a extra dime.

Can anyone tell me and the public why/what 12 million dollars was for property acquisition on the school tax? This really doesn’t make since to me.

He wanted to spend 12million dollars to purchase the land for a school next to Walmart off Jim Booth. I’m sure there would be a friendly kickback at that massive price. And I wish I could sell everything I owned so I could pay even more in taxes for Robbie! I think we need a new turf field for little league! I also think we should pay the board members 180,000 a piece, downgrade the teaches pay! I mean the faculty and stuff are the ones that do all the work keeping things running! lol slap in the face seems like!
