Preston not able to attend in person;

BOE USES TELECONFERENCING FOR FIRST TIME

In what Lawrence Co. Supt. Robbie Fletcher called a forerunner to the future, the BOE used teleconferencing for the first time ever at last night’s meeting.

In addition to the regular items on the agenda, including listing of teachers and other personnel for the upcoming school year, the LCBOE tested the new form of meeting when a member cannot attend in person.

Here’s how Fletcher explained it this morning:

“…In the past, state law did not allow for a Board member to attend through video conferencing avenues (such as Skype, Google Hangouts, etc.).   Each Board member had to be physically in the meeting in order to vote,” Fletcher said. “Now, a Board member can attend as long as those in attendance can clearly see and hear the Board member through the video conference.”

“…Last night, Mr. (Chairman Heath) Preston was able to participate in the discussions and to vote on each action even though he was unable to attend physically,” Fletcher continued. “Our technology coordinator, Mr. Thomas Burns, did a great job establishing the internet connection and arranging the proper hardware.”

“…Also, Mrs. Betty Mullins, our Board secretary, worked very hard to get the Board book/information ready a day early to allow Mr. Preston to prepare for the meeting.  Even though the planning has some added steps for a teleconference, we will utilize this process again, if necessary.”
