LOUISA, Ky. — The Sullivan University Center for Learning-Louisa has reached an agreement to offer discounted tuition rates to graduates and employees of the Louisa-based Addition Recovery Care, LLC, also known as ARC.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Sullivan University and ARC is scheduled to be signed Thursday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m. in Classroom B of the Sullivan University Center for Learning-Louisa.

“All ARC graduates will be eligible for the discount upon the execution of the MOU,” said Catrina Vargo, Associate Director for Community Outreach and Admissions at the Louisa Center for Learning. “In addition, as a thank you for the work they do serving their graduates and the communities in which they’re located, Sullivan University is very happy to extend the program to all ARC employees.”

The discounted tuition will be offered to ARC employees and graduates who live outside the counties that are currently eligible for discounted tuition at The Sullivan University Center for Learning-Louisa: Lawrence Pike, Floyd, Magoffin, Greenup, Boyd, Carter, Elliot, Martin and Morgan counties in Kentucky and Wayne County in West Virginia.

“A major part of the recovery process is often entering an education or job-training program,” said Matt Brown, chief of staff to ARC CEO Tim Robinson. “Graduates start to feel like a normal person again as they start to assimilate back into society. That really is an awesome process to witness and we are excited about working with Sullivan University through this MOU, which will provide tremendous benefits to our graduates and employees.”

Based in Louisville, Sullivan University has been providing career-focused education for more than 50 years. Via an agreement arranged with Lawrence County Judge-executive John Osborne, Sullivan expanded to Eastern Kentucky by launching classes in Louisa in late March.

ARC operates a network of state-licensed residential and outpatient drug and alcohol abuse treatment centers throughout eastern Kentucky. The network includes the following 13 treatment centers;

  • Karen’s Place Phase I and Karen’s Place II, womens’ centers in Louisa, Kentucky
  • Beth’s Blessing, a women’s center in near London, Kentucky
  • Lydia’s House, a women’s center in Harlan, Kentucky
  • Belle Grove Springs, a men’s center in near Morehead, Kentucky
  • Lake Hills Oasis, a men’s center in Somerset, Kentucky
  • Sanibel House Phase II, a men’s center in Catlettburg, Kentucky
  • Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Centers in Lexington, Louisa, Mt. Sterling and Prestonsburg
  • Three new treatment centers opening this month
    • Karen’s Place Maternity Center, a women’s center in Louisa, Kentucky
    • Lydia’s House, a women’s center in Harlan, Kentucky
    • Sanibel House Phase I, a men’s center in Catlettsburg, Kentucky

Current capacity in the centers is 112 beds. The three new centers opening this month will add 48 more beds.

“Sullivan’s commitment to Eastern Kentucky speaks volumes by their willingness to expand in this region and to form partnerships with area businesses, organizations, schools, and local government,” Vargo said. “Sullivan University and ARC actually have a very similar mission. We both want to help people improve their lives. We believe the work of each organization can create a synergy in which the final outcome will be stronger and better for the student than either organization can accomplish on its own. It’s a win-win-win situation.

“ARC is a growing company,” she said. “Students who complete their Sullivan University program may have an opportunity to become employees to fill those jobs. And, current employees may be able to prepare for possible promotion and greater job responsibilities.”

Because ARC has locations throughout the region, the program will make provide more well-trained and educated job applicants available for jobs in their communities.

“The programs offered via this MOU can provide a path to education from certificate programs all the way up to and including several Masters level programs,” Vargo said. “A strong education will provide purpose for seeking and maintaining a healthy and rewarding lifestyle. We believe this program has the possibility of leading students to a variety of careers with the opportunity for employment and/or to earn higher wages.

“The opportunities and possibilities are tremendous,” she said. “We also know that once a person becomes a college graduate, it is much more likely their children, and their children’s children will also seek a college education. So this program may very well impact the communities that ARC serves for generations to come in a very positive way.”

The Sullivan University Center for Learning-Louisa is located at 122 S. Main Cross Street, adjacent to the Lawrence County Fiscal Court building.
