As anti-hunger advocates gather today at the state Capitol to launch Feeding Kentucky’s Hunger Action Month kickoff, experts say the next Farm Bill — the nation’s largest nutrition and agricultural legislation — will decide the fate of many of the federal food programs Kentuckians rely on.

Cassidy Wheeler, advocacy coordinator for Feeding Kentucky, said new work reporting requirements are expected to impact many Kentuckians 50 and older who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP.

“13,000 Kentuckians who are between the ages of 50 and 55, they’re at risk of losing their SNAP benefits because of these new requirements that got put into place with the debt ceiling negotiations,” Wheeler explained.

The U.S. House is expected to pass its version of the Farm Bill at the end of September. According to the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy, in 2020 SNAP provided food assistance to 219,000 children, 60,000 people over the age of 60, and more than 20,000 adults.

Amid soaring gas and grocery prices, and cost-of living expenses, Wheeler noted the Farm Bill also provides an opportunity to strengthen The Emergency Food Assistance Program known as TEFAP.

“It supplies over 20% of food to food banks,” Wheeler reported. “If you’ve ever heard of people go into a food bank monthly to get kind of boxes of food, that’s TEFAP.”

This year, nearly two-thirds of responding food banks reported an increase in demand for food assistance, according to Feeding America’s latest food bank pulse survey.

So let’s make it even worse for these people and cut their food stamps even more and over 75% are probably children. Do we not see a problem here ?? Who cares for these children ?? Evidently not our government.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, is part of a federal nutrition program that helps qualifying low-income households purchase nutritious food. This program is designed to increase their nutritional level so that households can stay healthy.

Individuals must apply for the program and provide all the required documentation. In order to qualify, applicants must meet certain financial criteria(income, assets) and non-financial (state residency, citizenship/alien status, work registration, and other) requirements.

      How to apply:
      Online
      Via Telephone 1-855-306-8959
Print out application and mail, fax or hand deliver the document to the local office.

After the application is filed, the individual will be interviewed by a case worker and should be prepared to answer questions related to the household situation. Once it is determined that the applicant is eligible for SNAP benefits, an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card will be sent via mail to the address provided in the application. It will also include instructions on how to activate the card and choose a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The EBT card should be signed immediately.

The amount of benefit provided is based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. SNAP benefits are issued monthly on the EBT Card. This card can be used just like a debit card at authorized grocery stores and food retailers. SNAP benefits can be used to purchase almost any food item, except ready-to-eat hot foods. It can also be used to buy seeds and plants to grow fruits and vegetables. The following items cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits: tobacco, alcohol, pet food, soap and other household products, medicines, and other non-food items.

I receive a whole $23 in Foodstamps. I worked all my life as a Social Worker and was injured working in a Ohio State Prison and I get $1410 in SSD. My car is 11 years old so high maintenance and I can’t afford another one. I have family but no help from them. My home needs maintenance, insurances on car and home, taxes, everyday living expenses households have like gas, electric, water/sewage etc. I live well below poverty level and I get a whole $23 SNAP benefits. I lost a parent and received a very small life insurance and I am an only child, I have all of $20,000. 00. I feel “rich” but I am smart enough to know that won’t last long with maintenance on my home and car. And my 3 grandkids can forget Birthday and Christmas gifts. It’s all I can do to have enough gas in my car to visit them. I have 2 kids and 3 grandkids. I have seen my son and my 4 year old gbaby. I have been home since January and have yet to see my daughter and her 2 kids. So I am sick of hearing people complain about us taking advantage of the system Medicare is a joke without a supplement so I have to pay for that as well. I know that’s a “luxury” . I have tried going back to work at something I can do with my degree and my experience in eastern Ky. That’s a joke. Many more young people they’d rather hire and keep in the job longer they think than someone almost retirement age, oh yes I have no extra retirement to draw from at retirement age. I couldn’t afford to raise my 2 kids on my starting salary of $12,000. 00 a year for the State of Kentucky back then. When I was hurt I made all of $24,000.00 then so I am getting highest benefits I will ever get now except for the small raises from Social Security yearly now. Or so I was told when I called them I had one small IRA with all of $1300.00 in it long gone now. The only thing I have going for me is I do own my home no house payments but plenty of maintenance it’s an older home. Thanks to my son Chris only I was able to buy it after he did a lot of up dating but it still needs a new air conditioning unit etc. So you all can shut up about my $23 whole dollars a month and KMA. I take it with pride as I paid for it all my adult life. Thank you! I promise not to eat too much.

Well I guess my comment wasn’t worthy to show. But as an Social Worker all my life and hurt at 60 yoa on the job I get all of $23 dollars SNAP benefits for all the years I put in for the state raising 2 children on my own on $15,000.00 a year ending in $24, 000. 00 and now receive $1410 per month no more $ will ever come in except the yearly increases all Social Security recipients get. Have applied for part time jobs to help my income with no success. Who’s going to hire a 60 year old when they can hire a younger person that might stay longer although discrimination is illegal but common sense over rules that. I have a 12 year old car and a much older house thanks to my son. If it were not for him I wouldn’t have the house but both my adult do very well in the medical field and engineering. And they will not help me at all other than my house. So I live on maybe $23 SNAP if I don’t lose it and $1410 a month. No wiggle room if I can even make it on that with taxes insurance etc cost. Now we’ll see if this post makes the cut. I live in Eastern Ky to be close to family. But other than lack of part time jobs I have received that makes no difference it’s tough everywhere.

There are a lot of jobs you can do from home post-Covid. You could also check out AARP for jobs for Seniors. I work for JCPS, and they need bus monitors for preschoolers. Maybe your school district has similar needs. Hopefully these ideas can help you find part-time employment.

    I. Feel your pain. At 66 I’m discovering that a single SS check each month doesn’t cut it. My saving grace is VA Healthcare. The small deductible associated with that sometimes scares the he’ll out me. Like you all my things are paid for but I’m one car breakdown from deep DoDoo. I sure as hell don’t begrudge you your assistance. If I thought I could get it I’d apply. I’ve already discovered the age ceiling with finding a job. I’m just thankful I don’t have anyone depending on me to eat. All the young folks with families must be going through hell. Gob bless you and keep you as well as everyone in this boat!

Thank you for your service Denny. I’m essentially in the same boat. I have a little money in the bank and own what I have, but like you I’m one major car breakdown from broke. I go to the store and see some big fat man or woman in a scooter chair and a cart load of food (mostly soft drinks and snack cakes) and then they pay with an EBT or Snap or whatever they call it. I actually applied for food stamps one time and was offered $14 dollars a month. They said I made too much on Social Security? I PAID ALL OF THAT IN! I’m 66 and one half, no one would hire me and if they did the government would take as much as they could away.

GTEAT NEWS, no more snack cakes and energy drinks. Get a damn job you lazy lowlifes!

That comment wasn’t meant for Randi, she deserves them. People who do deserve never get, those who don’t, always do.

  9. KAG says:

Just keep voting for your Republicans Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid is next.

    • Snidely Whiplash says:

Sure it is you braindead SOB. Able bodied people weren’t the intended recipients of food stamps, but lowlifes always get them. For example people on social security are not eligible for food stamps because their income is counted, however SSI recipients (PEOPLE LIKE YOU), don’t. How in the hell is it right to give food assistance to someone who wont work, and take it away from someone who worked all their life? The system is badly broken, and it was done by Dims and their supporters. The GOP is trying to fix it…it’s that simple, simple mind.
