More than 22 million children receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program. For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat.

What happens when they go home over the weekend?

The Hope Youth Group of the Silver Creek United Church of Crum WV is doing their part to help hungry students.

The Silver Creek United Baptist Church of Crum WV brings their Hope Youth Group to help feed hungry children over the summer with their BackPack Program. THYG runs this program totally on the Volunteers of the group.

Puppeteers of Hope Youth Group

Drema Collins, a leader for the group, states, “This is the only group in the state totally run by the Youth”. They come to Food City once a month for a Food Drive and serve the students of Crum Middle School, Crum Elementary, Fort Gay K-8 and Tolsia High School. The BackPack consists of 2 main meals, 2 breakfasts and 2 snacks for the weekend until the child returns to school on Monday. The community has benefited from these Food Drives for the past three years. Volunteers learn great life lessons while helping their peers.

Sara Dillon and Angel Jordan, future Tolsia High School Freshman, love Super Saturday’s and helping out those in need.

The Puppeteers entertain the grocery store patrons as they shop with the hope that they will spread a little love by donating kid friendly convenience foods. Some of the foods needed for the Food Pantry include soups, spaghettio’s. ravioli, peanut butter, pop tarts, lunch to go, etc. Shoppers are encouraged to donate.
