Official Sheriff’s Office support on incident:

Keith PenixOn May 6, 2017 at approximately 12:30 pm Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler observed a passenger in a vehicle acting erratic and also observed traffic violations.

The vehicle sped up as Wheeler was attempting to catch back up to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle turned down South Pocahontas Street from Highway 2565 at which time the passenger Keith Penix, 26 of Louisa exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Penix was given multiple commands to stop by Wheeler but failed to do so. Penix then ran through some underbrush and fell over a rock wall landing in the creek below.

At that time Wheeler advised 911 to send Netcare Ambulance and the Louisa Fire Department for the injured Penix. Once Penix was removed from the creek he was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, WV.

Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office

Penix’ condition is not listed at present but it was reported that he had an injured leg. The report does not say if Penix was charged with a violation.
