It’s always good to meet our new pastors in the Lawrence Co./Ft. Gay area and this one is no exception. Coming to us from Boyd County almost a year ago, Scot Hoeksema arrived Friday ready to begin his Louisa ministry.

Scot Hoeksema Scot Hoeksema began serving First United Methodist Church in June, 2017. Prior to moving to Louisa, he served as the pastor of Grassland Community Church in Boyd County for four years and as a student pastor for Bethel UMC in Russell County for two years.

Scot has been married for 37 years to Rev. Pat Hoeksema, a native of Reading, PA, who is the pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Greenup, KY. Together they have three daughters, Katie (Columbus, OH), Alison, married to David Coleman (Lexington, KY), and Kelly, married to Kris Kachurak (Atlanta, GA). They have one granddaughter, Cora, the 11 month old daughter of Alison and David.

Scot is a native of Muscatine, IA, and has also lived in St. Louis, MO, Allentown, PA, The Hague, Netherlands, Antwerp, Belgium, and Columbia, MD, before moving to Lexington, KY.

Scot received his call to ministry later in life. Initially, he obtained a degree in biology from the University of Missouri-Columbia and later a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. His call to ministry followed careers in medical research, the paper industry, biotechnology and home remodeling.

He graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary in May, 2013. At Asbury he was a member of the Theta Phi Honor Society, the Eta Beta Rho Hebrew Honor Society, and the Leitourgia et Homiletica Honor Society. He was ordained an elder in the Kentucky Annual Conference in June, 2016.

Locally, Scot is a member of the LOUISA Rotary and has recently been elected chairperson of the Louisa Ministerial Association.

He is passionate about the scriptures, Holy Communion, social justice, the kingdom of God here on earth, leadership development, bringing the Word of God to all peoples, and the Church of the 21st century. Scot enjoys photography, ceramics, poetry, art, literature, and gardening.
