GRAVE MARKED AFTER 170 YEARS

A US millitary marker replaced a weather worn, unreadable field stone of Revolutionary War Soldier, Adam Crum, at the mouth of Silver Creek, near Crum, Wayne County, WV today, September 7th, 2021.

The location and identification of the grave was made possible through a letter written in 1972 from a creditible witness, Maude Crum Dutton, who was born in the same house where Adam Crum died in October 10, 1851.  Maude was 18 years old when her grandmother, Elizabeth Pack Crum died in 1914.  This was the same house, which was located on the same property that Crum Pre-k-8 is located.  Elizabeth Pack Crum, was a daughter-in-law of Adam Crum.  She probably cooked the last meal that both her father-in-law, Adam Crum, and her mother-in-law Barbara Horn Crum ate.  They are both burried under the huge cedar trees at the mouth of Silver Creek.

More than 350 graduates of Crum High School have been identified as descendants of Adam Crum. The late Herbert Cline, Jr. as well as well as the actress, Ashley Judd are descendants of Adam and Barbara Horn Crum.

A celebration of the life of Revolutionary War Soldier, Adam Crum, will be culminated by the dedication and unveiling of a roadside marker at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 at the Crum Pre-K-8 School in Crum, WV.  Adam Crum, who is the progenitor of many descendants, is burried under three giant cedar trees near the moth of Silver Creek, about half of a mile South of Crum, WV.  Over 350 graduates of Crum High School have been identified as descendants of Adam Crum.
The sponsoring organization, The Wayne County Genealogical and Historical Society is preparing a special edition of their quarterly for this dedication ceremony.  This publication includes the names of the 350 graduates, pictures of 27 Wayne High School graduates with a connection to Adam Crum, and some WWII military personnel with a direct relation to Adam Crum.
The roadside marker was set near the Crum Pumping station on August 23 by the sign department of the WV Department of Highways.
Alternate plans are being made to have the celebration in spite of Covid  19 restrictions.  The show will go on regardless of masks, social distancing, or any other problems.

A soldier should never lay in an unmarked grave. I’m glad this happened for this family and wish it for many many more. Thank you for your service sir.
