Beshear as a contender to be Clinton’s secretary of Health and Human Services if she is elected

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former Ky. Gov. Steve BeshearFormer Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear is on a list of people being considered by Hillary Clinton for U.S. Agriculture Secretary, according to Bloomberg Politics.

Citing “unidentified persons close to the matter,” Bloomberg said the list also includes California Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross; former U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, of Arkansas; former U.S. Deputy Agriculture Secretary Kathleen Merrigan; and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Beshear seemed to confirm in a one-sentence statement that he may be in line for the job.

“I’m flattered that my name is being mentioned for such a prestigious position, but I have no expectation one way or the other,” said Beshear, who along with his wife, Jane, own a horse farm in Clark County.

Beshear, 72, served as Kentucky governor for two terms, from 2007-2015. His son, Andy Beshear, is currently Kentucky’s Attorney General.

Last month, Modern Healthcare listed Steve Beshear as a contender to be Clinton’s secretary of Health and Human Services if she is elected. Beshear’s primary accomplishments as governor were the creation of the kynect health insurance exchange and Kentucky’s Medicaid expansion.

Current Gov. Matt Bevin is dismantling kynect and has asked the federal government for approval to revise the Medicaid expansion.
