Charleston, W. Va. — Everyone that was in the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday afternoon for the Class A State cheerleading competition knew coming in that Tug Valley and Tolsia were the two teams to beat in the eight team competition and those two did not disappoint.

2017 State Class A Runner Up Tolsia Rebels

2017 State Class A Runner Up Tolsia Rebels -- Allie Webster, Shelby Jude, Daniel Williams, Isabella Simpkins, Rosie Sturgill, Kendall Tucker, Raygan Meddings, Caitlin Grace, Kirsten Thompson, Madison Wilson, Candace Parsley, Mikayla Chaffin, Lea Blackburn, Racheal Ferguson, Denisha Ratcliff Coaches Trina Fitzpatrick and Marsha Walker

Both teams had performances that were worthy of bringing a state championship home to southern West Virginia and the final results were going to be close.

After much deliberation by the five judges the results were in and I’m not sure the fans realized how close, as the Panthers edged the Rebels by the slimmest of margins to win the Class A state cheerleading championship by half a point 314.25 to 313.75 as both squads laid it all on the line of front of a raucous crowd.

Tolsia will bring home the Runner Up trophy for the second time in the last three years.

Both teams have a proud tradition for cheerleading as Tug Valley and Tolsia have won many state championships. The fan bases from both teams should be proud.

In Class AAA it was Spring Valley bringing home the crown and Brooke finishing runner up.

In Class AA Robert C. Byrd captured another title with Logan coming in second place.
