PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED TAX LEVY FOR LAWRENCE COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Lawrence County Board of Education will hold a public hearing at the Lawrence County High School Library on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, 6:00 PM to hear public comments regarding a proposed general fund tax levy of 69.6 cents on real property and 71.1 cents on personal property.

The General Fund tax levied in fiscal year 2022 was 57.5 cents on real property and 58.7 cents on personal property and produced revenue of $4,223,040.04.  The proposed General Fund tax rate of 69.6 cents on real property and 71.1 cents on personal property is expected to produce $5,385,412.32.  Of this amount $1,100,162.19 is from new and personal property.  The compensating tax for 2023 is 57.2 cents on real property and 58.7 cents on personal property and is expected to produce $4,429,706.36.

The general areas to which revenue of $1,162,373.32 above 2022 revenue is to be allocated are as follows: Cost of collections, $34,871.20; building fund, $906,856; instruction, $0; transportation, $110,323.06; and maintenance of plant, $110,323.06.

The General Assembly has required publication of this advertisement and information contained herein.

Listed below is a courtesy copy of an advertisement to meet the requirements of KRS 160.470(8)(b) which states in part “The district board of education shall, within seven (7) days following adoption of an ordinance, order, resolution, or motion to levy a general tax rate, except as provided in subsections (9) and (10) of this section and KRS 157.440, which will produce revenue from real property, exclusive of revenue from new property as defined in KRS 132.010, more than four percent (4%) over the amount of revenue produced by the compensating tax rate defined in KRS 132.010, cause the following to be published, in the newspaper of largest circulation in the county, a display type of advertisement of not less than twelve (12) column inches:…”

The Lawrence County Board of Education has adopted a General Fund rate of 69.6 cents on real property and 71.1 cents on personal property.  Of this rate, 12.4 cents is subject to recall.

    Well the people need to get out and show up at this meeting and voice their opinions about this taxation and then sign a petition to stop this before goes any further because once it gets put on it will never be cut back off .

      Go out and vote no! They need to learn to handle their funds appropriately like any other business does! Because that’s exactly how school systems are ran like businesses! More taxes is just a bull crap bailout way! Do away with some of the extracurricular upgrades because we all know that doesn’t make children smarter, just gives them more excuses and allows these parents to live vicariously through their children!
