DEATH PENALTY ON THE TABLE FOR BOWEN, SMITH

Bowen and smith appeared in martin Circuit Court Friday and the prosecutor said the death penalty will be sought in the triple murder case.UPDATE  — MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) – If convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the man and woman charged with murdering three people in Martin County, Kentucky back in August.

The Commonwealth Attorney filed the paperwork Tuesday to seek the death penalty against Jack Smith, 41, of Inez, and Amanda Bowen, 26, of Inez.

The pair is charged with the murders of Tina Goble, her boyfriend, Cannie Johnson, and Goble’s granddaughter Trinity Maynard, who was only 8-years-old.

Investigators said all three were shot and stabbed to death. They were found at Goble’s burned out home in Inez on August 16.

About a week later, a Martin County Grand Jury indicted Smith and Bowen on three counts of Murder/Complicity, three counts of Robbery/Complicity, and one count each of Tampering with Physical Evidence/Complicity.

Smith is also charged with Arson, while Bowen is charged with being a Persistent Felony Offender.

In filing the notice prosecutors say there were aggravating circumstances including that the murders were intentional and that the motive was robbery.

The pair is not scheduled to be back in court until March.
