May BOE meeting honors tennis team; Supt. personnel decisions reported
LOUISA – The Lawrence County Board of Education met for their regular meeting on Monday evening at the Lawrence County High School library and recognized the regional champion LCHS Girls Tennis team, the LCHS Boys Tennis Team, and the top community volunteers for each school and for the district as a whole.
Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher lauded the 2018 tennis team, coached by Cindy Hay and Cassandra Webb, for continuing a tradition of winning that has existed in the program for decades. (SEE Lazer Sports for feature story on LC Boys and Girls Tennis.)
“If you look at it historically, this is one of our school’s most successful programs and they added to it again this year with a team championship for the girls and with participants for the boys who went on to compete successfully at the State Tournament,” Fletcher said before issuing certificates to team members.
Team members recognized for achievements were: Maci Pollock, Katelyn Pauley, Sheree Hay, Jessalyn Osborn, Adrian Webb, Eden Webb, Noah Fairchild, Brock Kessinger, SJ Lycans. Pollock and Eden Webb won the 15th Region Doubles title and competed in the State Tournament, Pauley was a 15th Region Semifinalist, state qualifier, and advanced to the second round of the State Tournament, Fairchild was a 15th Region Semifinalist, the doubles team of Kessinger and Lycans were 15th Region Semifinalists and won the first round of the State Tournament, the doubles team of Adrian Webb and Sheree Hay were 15th Region Quarterfinalists, Osborn was a 15th Region Quarterfinalist. Pollock was a third time state qualifier and Eden Webb marked her fifth time qualifying for state. That duo is back-to-back doubles champions.
Dr. Fletcher also awarded plaques to the top volunteers who served the schools during the 2017-18 school year. The volunteers logged nearly 7,000 hours assisting the schools and the top volunteers by school were:
Pam Hay (Louisa Middle School), Atasha Hughes (Louisa East), Shiloe Ham (Louisa West), Ginger Copley (LCHS), Marla Spillman (Fallsburg), Pam Maxie (Blaine), and Jennifer Boggs (Blaine). Maxie recorded 1,426 hours and Boggs logged 1,235.5 hours.
Fletcher noted the successful graduation ceremony at LCHS on May 18, highlighted by conferring diplomas on 166 graduates and a commencement speech by New York City model and LCHS graduate Jenna Kelly.
He also noted appreciation for local organizations and the colleges and universities that combined to award graduates over $250,000 in scholarship money.
Fletcher updated the board on his transition from chairman of Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative to membership on the executive committee of KVEC, gave an update on the LCHS field trip to the HAAS Facility in Paintsville and on the Local Facilities Planning Committee.
The board approved the tentative budget for 2018-19, approved various contracts and services and will meet again for their regularly scheduled June meeting on June 18 at 6:00 p.m. at LCHS.
