THIRD TIME OF THIS KIND IS AN UNLUCKY CHARM: MARTIN COUNTY CRIMINAL CASEY J. SPENCE’S LATEST CRIME ESCAPE SPREE, AFTER STEALING THIS TRUCK IN LAWRENCE COUNTY, AND LATER HOT PURSUIT IN MARTIN COUNTY.

A Martin County man, who is now becoming a notorious criminal offender in the area, is facing new charges after police say he tried to run from them in a stolen vehicle, threatened to kill them when he got out of jail and then tried to escape in a prison van after being arrested.

According to a report by the Martin County Sheriff Department at approximately 7:30 P.M. Tuesday evening, August 18, Sheriff John H.Kirk received a call from Martin County Dispatch that a BOLO from Lawrence County had been issued for a stolen 1988 Ford F-150 truck. Sheriff Kirk was informed that Casey J. Spence of Tomahawk had stolen the truck. Sheriff Kirk went to the Martin/Lawrence County line to observe for the vehicle. Less than 3 hours later, at around 10:30 P.M., Sheriff Kirk received a call that Casey Spence was in the Trace Fork Ridge area of the Tomahawk community of Martin County.

Sheriff Kirk and deputy Billy Patrick proceeded to go to the area where Deputy Patrick spotted Spence in the vehicle, and soon came across Casey Spence, 22, of Tomahawk, driving a truck that had been stolen earlier in the day from Lawrence County. When they tried to pull Casey Spence over, he took off, leading them on a chase. Spence tried to elude Deputy Patrick but was unsuccessful.

Once the officers were able to stop Casey Spence, Sheriff Kirk arrested him and took him into custody, and charged him with:

• RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY UNDER/$10,000,
• OPERATING ON SUSPENDED OR REVOKED OPERATORS LICENSE,
• FLEEING OR EVADING POLICE, 2ND DEGREE (MOTOR VEHICLE), as well as
• TERRORISTIC THREATENING, 3RD DEGREE, after Casey Spence threatened to kill Sheriff Kirk and his deputies when he gets out of jail.

Following his arrest, after being booked at the Sheriff’s office, Casey Spence jumped a handrail and entered the driver’s side of the transport vehicle. He attempted to steal the running vehicle. Deputy Kirk extricated Mr. Spence from the vehicle to prevent him from fleeing. Spence got away from the transporting officer and got into their cruiser, which was running at the time, and shut the door. He was pulled from the car by Martin County Sheriff John Kirk while attempting to put the car in gear to leave the scene.

For that set of actions, Casey Spence was additionally charged with:

• ESCAPE 2ND DEGREE-(IDENTIFY FACILITY),
• THEFT BY UNLAWFUL TAKING OR DISPOSITION AUTO – $500 OR MORE BUT UNDER/$10,000.

Casey J. Spence was eventually transported and taken to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsvile, where he is being held on a $10,025 full cash only bond.

Martin County Sheriff Kirk says thanks to the public, and also deputy Dwayne Bowen with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office for their help in the case.

Since the last five, Casey Spence has stolen a motorcycle in Paintsvile on Thursday, August 13, which was found the next day at his home, but Spence was not arrested after officers told the bike’s owner he was “too inebriated” to take to jail and could not be taken to the hospital (and the jail for that matter) for COVID-19. But when owners went to his home to get the stolen motorcycle, they saw Spence running up into the hills.

When Casey Spence stole a second motorcycle in Painstville Sunday evening and was caught shortly afterwards in Martin County, he was released from jail by Monday afternoon.

But after stealing the Lawrence County truck Tuesday evening, and all the related charges to that incident, and the high cash bond for Casey Spence, it will likely the best Mr. Spence remains in jail.
