A Magoffin County man is facing charges related to a child sexual abuse material investigation conducted by a special crimes unit of Kentucky State Police, which uncovered something even a video worse than having child pornography videos .

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Electronic Crime Branch interviewed and arrested Kent Simpkins, 42, of Salyersville, KY., on February 13, on charges related to a child sexual abuse material investigation.

Kent Simpkins was located, interviewed, and arrested as the result of an undercover Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) investigation. The KSP Electronic Crime Branch began the investigation after discovering the suspect uploading sexually explicit images of juveniles to an online social media account.

The investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant for Kent Simpkins and for raiding his residence on Burning Fork Road in Salyersville on Tuesday evening, February 13, 2024. Equipment used to facilitate the crime was seized and taken to KSP’s forensic laboratory for examination.

In an interview during the KSP raid, Kent Simpkins allegedly admitted operating the account which shared the video and to seeing pornographic material involving minors shared by other users.

The state police report notes that during their search, KSP troopers found a video of Kent Simpkins engaged in a sex act with his dog, and he allegedly admitted that as well.

The investigation into this case is still ongoing.

Kent Simpkins is currently charged with three (3) counts of:

  • POSSESSING MATTER PORTRAY SEXUAL PERFORMANCE BY MINOR UNDER 12; and one (1) count of

If convicted on all charges by jury in a criminal trial, Kent Simpkins could face a total of from 23 years to up to 55 years in a state prison.

Kent Simpkins was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville, Ky., in Johnson County; he has since posted his bond and his since been released from the BSRDC jail

###

The Kentucky Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force is comprised of more than twenty-six local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The mission of the ICAC Task Force, created by the United States Department of Justice and administrated by the Kentucky State Police, is to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in developing a response to cyber enticement and child sexual abuse material investigations. This support encompasses forensic and investigative components, training and technical assistance, victim services, prevention and community education. The ICAC program was developed in response to the increasing number of children and teenagers using the internet, the proliferation of child sexual abuse material, and the heightened online activity of predators searching for unsupervised contact with underage victims.
