A Magoffin County, Kentucky man faces decades in federal prison, which potentially may be a life sentence, due to his age, after he was found guilty in his federal trial on drug trafficking charges.

The now convicted defendant, Daniel Jackson, was convicted on Wednesday, August 28, by a federal jury sitting in Pikeville, KY., following a two-day trial, of possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl.

According to the evidence presented at the trial, on February 7, 2024, law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle being driven by Daniel Jackson. During a search of the vehicle Daniel Jackson was in, law enforcement located and seized over 70 grams of methamphetamine. Daniel Jackson then attempted to discard a bag of fentanyl, in the police car was placed in after his arrest.

Daniel Jackson was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 23, 2024. He has been held at the Pike County Detention Center in Pikeville since June 14, after he was taken into custody via the U.S. Marshals service following his indictment.

Daniel Jackson will appear for sentencing on December 9, 2024. He faces a maximum of 40 years in prison. However, the Court must consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the applicable federal sentencing statutes before imposing a sentence.

Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Erik Davodowich, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Louisville Field Division; and Sheriff William “Bill” Meade of the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Department made the announcement of the guilty verdict of Daniel Jackson.
