Lawrence schools will return to teaching handwriting this year…

Where has the summer gone? With only 25 days of summer vacation remaining Lawrence Co. students are keeping a close eye on the calendar. The time-honored phrase “Back to School” can be heard throughout our community. The Lawrence Co. Ky School Calendar has been finalized and the first day of school will be Wednesday August 2, 2017.

School Superintendent, Dr. Robbie Fletcher, is excited about some of the changes and improvements that are on-tap for this coming school year.

During a recent interview, Dr. Fletcher was eager to share some of the stated goals for the 2017/2018 school year. “As our latest initiative, our high school students will have 1-to-1 technology for the upcoming year.,” Fletcher explained. “Each student will receive a ChromeBook to manage their classwork and to use as a resource.”

“In our K-6 settings, we will continue our focus on fully implementing the Benchmark Advance reading curriculum as well as the Go Math! series. (Our MAP scores reflect some nice gains with these two series.) Also, we are going back to some basics in our elementary schools.

Fletcher noted the return to teaching handwriting in the elementary schools.

“We will be teaching handwriting again as part of the curriculum. Over the years, our state has moved away from teaching handwriting, but we feel that this needs to be re-instituted.

…Some of our schools are looking at including robotics as part of their Project Lead the Way curriculum and we are continuing to focus on dual credit opportunities for our college-bound students. On the playing field, we look for great seasons in our extra-curricular programs and hope to bring home some district, regional, and state championships. In short, it will be another great year to be ALL IN!”
