LAWRENCE COUNTY SCHOOLS TO START AUGUST 26 FOR STUDENTS

But manner of instruction still up in the air

The Lawrence County Board of Education unanimously approved the starting of this Covid-19 altered year on August 26 for students at a special meeting last night.

Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher issued a one sentence press release today announcing the schedule change. The beginning date was previously August 6 and Fletcher stood by that date until state guidelines came out on Monday.

Students will be required to wear masks both on the busses and in the school environment and so will staff members under one of the plans being offered by the board. You can see the schedule for the year as well as a survey that parents are being urgently asked to fill out which is also shown on the links below.

So the date has been set but the manner of conducting school is apparently still up in the air.

Fletcher wrote the following note for parents:

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS:

It is VERY important that you complete the following survey. The information will be vital for opening our schools for 2020-2021.

You must fill out a survey FOR EACH STUDENT in your household:

SURVEY FOR PARENTS CLICK HERE

Here is part of what parents are being asked on the survey:

Based on the provided description, which instructional option do you prefer your child to receive during the 2020-2021 school year? Please select the option that best matches your preference:

*  TRADITIONAL INSTRUCTION OPTION (I plan to send my child/children to school 5 days a week. Students attend school for in-person instruction with teachers and classmates 5 days a week – WITH THE GOAL OF A “NORMAL” SCHOOL DAY and includes the safety precautions, face coverings/masks, and temperature checks/assurances, etc. as described on the previous page)
*  NON-TRADITIONAL INSTRUCTION OPTION (I do not plan to send my child/children to school to start the new school year. Instead, I want my child/children to participate in online instruction from home 5 days a week. This option is limited to daily online or paper packet participation similar to the last nine-weeks of the 2019-2020 school year OR the use of an online program (such as APEX, etc.) In-person attendance at school is not required. Students may participate completely from home.)

*  HYBRID TRADITIONAL AND NON-TRADITIONAL OPTION (Students would be divided into two groups. Group A would attend in-person classes during a set period of time, while Group B would participate from home using paper packets and/or online instruction, similar to NTI Days. Then, the two groups would switch. Group B would participate in-person while Group A participated from home. The groups would alternate, back and forth, over a specified time frame. This option CANNOT BE OFFERED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE OTHER TWO OPTIONS.)

I sure hope that the school busses have air conditioning now. Imaging having to ride a crowded school bus on a hot day while wearing a suffocating mask.

I think it’s the worst thing ever!!!! Masks?! So stupid!!! Those poor children should not be wearing masks!!!!! You need to breathe oxygen & not your own carbon dioxide!!! Very dangerous!!!

I have one granddaughter going into 2nd grade and a grandson going into pre-K I am disappointed that they can’t enjoy a normal school year, however I understand precautions need to be taken. I do have a question. How can the children run & play with a mask on? While shopping at Walmart or Foodcity I have only noticed a handful of kids with a mask on or actually few adults. My daughter is a nurse and regardless of how careful she is this virus is like any other virus or flu and we will be exposed I really think that it will be near to impossible for children to wear a mask all day and it be successful. Maybe wear them to school but once in the class room take them off. Don’t know the answer and would not want to be in your shoes and will be praying for the right decisions to be made. Thank you for your care of our children.
