LOUISA, KY  — During the Board’s regular monthly meeting when public comments came upon the agenda Vicki Naugle and her daughter Brittany Branham-Evans were front and center with the proposal of having one day in September to set aside for September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Vicki Naugle & Brittany Branham-Evans

Their family was transformed after receiving the diagnosis that their son, Tucker Evans, had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. His battle took over 3 years, but he is cancer free today. There are many forms of childhood cancer and several children from Eastern Ky are suffering with this or have lost their fight. Since going through this experience with little knowledge on the illness, they feel it’s time to educate and bring as much awareness as possible. They even met another family Matt and Tera Collinsworth who’s, son Jackson Collinsworth was also being treated for Childhood Cancer. They plan on attending other schools and seeing if they too will follow in Lawrence County Board of Education’s footsteps.

Dr. Rob Fletcher and the Board of Education agreed and proposed having a football game in honor of the event, the football game is to be announced soon. Dr. Fletcher and the board felt if they could have a Pink Out Football Game for Breast Cancer Awareness it was only right to have a Gold Out Football Game for Childhood Cancer Awareness.

They used a “BEE AWARE” float through Mountain Heritage Day Parade in Fort Gay, WV and plan on using the float in the Septemberfest Day Parade starting Saturday, the 7th at 11:00.

Love this! I lost my daughter Mailyn “MayMay” Chandler as a result of pre b cell acute lymphocytic leukemia, which is a form of childhood cancer. She fought for 5 1/2 years before she passed away! Praying for both of these boys, as well as everyone else fighting cancer.
