Prestonsburg, Ky. — For only the second time in school history Lawrence Co. ( 19-8 ) will play for a District title after beating Betsy Layne 3-1 Monday in the semifinals of the 58th District Volleyball tournament.

The VolleyDawgs are all smiles in the locker room after the District victory.

L to R Emma Collins, Ally Huffman, Riley McClanahan, Lainey Blevins, Aryn Huffman, Gabby Stinnett, Sara Shannon, Grace Blevins, Brylee Stafford, Kenzley Brooks, Sophie Adkins

The Dawgs won the first set 25-22 but the Bobcats took set number two 25-13 to even up the match at 1 set apiece. In the third set Lawrence Co. won 25-21 and then closed out the match with a 25-19 victory to advance to the title game.

The VolleyDawgs will face Floyd Central ( 21-6 ) on Tuesday at Prestonsburg after the Jaguars swept the Blackcats in the first game on Monday.

The two teams met twice in the regular season with both games being played September 7th at Floyd Central and the Jaguars won both matches.

Lawrence Co. Head Coach Autumn Blevins

Coach’s Comments

“… Thank you! I’m so proud of this team. They fought multiple times coming from behind and responded well, especially when we lost the second set.  I like how this team has been able to overcome challenges all season long.”

“… Betsy Layne played great, making multiple adjustments on their end on hit defense and being more aggressive in their attack game since last time we met. They played well last night.”

“… This was a great team win where everyone stepped up and did their part. We struggled the past couple of weeks with missing serves and making consistent passes on serve receive. We did a better job with that last night.  As we go into tonight’s game, we will need those serves, consistent passing, and for our offense to get rolling from the start.”

“… I am extremely happy our seniors are extending their season. Ally has been a force for us with her aggressiveness at the net and consistent serves. Riley has done a great job passing and communicating consistently. Riley was actually part of our team the first time LCHS ever competed in a district championship my first year coaching in 2018.  It’s fun to see it come full circle for her!”

“… We look forward to taking on Floyd Central this evening in the Championship and doing something no LCHS volleyball team has ever done before, win a district championship.”
