The deadline to register to vote in the May 22 primary is fast approaching — anyone who still needs to register has just over one week left.

This will go for any new registrants, those who recently moved to the area or 17-year-olds who will be 18 before the Nov. 6 general election.

Citizens can register in-person at the local court clerk’s office or visiting to GoVoteKy.com and registering online before the 4 p.m. deadline April 23. To be eligible to vote in Kentucky you must be a U.S. citizen, have lived in Kentucky at least 28 days, be 18-years-old by the date of the next general election, have not been deemed mentally incompetent, have no had voting rights revoked and have no voting rights outside of Kentucky.

Unlike neighboring states, Kentucky does not allow early voting; however, those who will be out of town May 22 can request a mail-in ballot or vote in office between May 7 and May 21 during regular office hours.

Age, disability and illness are other approved reasons someone may vote absentee in-house or by mail, Humphries said.

Voting in the primary election will take place at your polling location between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. May 22.
