Former Louisa Bank VP appeal goes to high court for review
FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Supreme Court has agreed to review the appeals court case of former Louisa banker Edgar Purdom on charges of possession of child pornography. Purdom was convicted of the charges in Lawrence Circuit Court in April of 2014 and sentenced to 15 years by Curcuit Judge John D. Preston.
After serving five months of his sentence Purdom, 71, was released on an appeals bond by Preston in May of 2015 and then won his appeal to the state Court of Appeals on a technicality in May of 2016. The court ruled that the circuit court should have watched the 48 videos of child pornography itself before handing down a verdict and sentence.
Ky. Attorney General Andy Beshear then appealed the Appeals court ruling to the Supreme Court which agreed to rule on the circuit court’s actions last week (June 24).
If the Supreme Court rules the Appeals court erred, Purdom will be sent back to prison to serve the remainder of his term barring further appeals on the federal level. But if the Supreme Court rules the Appeals courts ruling in the case was proper, it will revert back to Lawrence Circuit Court.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Tony Skeens told The Lazer that he will retry Purdom in that case if it comes back to Circuit Court.
