Kentucky Power Restoration Update

Summary
High winds swept through Kentucky Power’s northeast service territory Tuesday causing power outages for 12,545 customers.
Current situation
Approximately 1,840 customers remain without power, with the majority of those being in Boyd County. Greenup, Carter and Lawrence counties also have outages. More than 85 percent of customers have been restored in less than 48 hours. There are 204 individual outage cases that are being addressed today and tomorrow, with the intent of wrapping up 95 percent of the outage work by late Friday night. Most of these outages contain small clusters of customers and a lot of the work is difficult and manual, meaning not truck accessible.

Kentucky Power Restoration Update

Weather
After a strong windstorm made its way through Kentucky Power’s northeast territory Tuesday morning, more than 12,000 customers were left without power. According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts up to 92 mph have been confirmed.
Summary
Currently, there are approximately 5,700 customers without power and more than 300 individual outage cases, with the majority in Boyd, Carter, Greenup, Lawrence and Martin counties. Crews made tremendous progress yesterday while fighting weather and finding significant damage to our distribution system along the way. So far, crews have discovered more than 75 broken poles, 30 broken cross arms, more than 70 spans of downed wire and numerous downed trees.
Restoration Efforts
Nearly 50% of customers affected by the storm have been restored. However, restoration is expected to continue through the end of the week.

Local company and business partners were joined by crews from the southern part of our territory yesterday. Additional out-of-state resources will be joining the effort today. There are more than 300 line personnel and contractors assisting with restoration.

Safety Messages
- Stay away from all downed power lines! Downed lines can carry an electric current that can cause serious or even fatal injuries. If you encounter a fallen wire, keep yourself and others away from it and anything it may be touching. Call 911 and Kentucky Power immediately at 1-800-572-1113 to report.
- Fallen trees are likely to occur. Be aware of the potential for trees and overhanging limbs to fall without warning. The previous rains have made the ground soggy which means trees can fall more easily, especially with the strong winds expected.

I picked up a couple of wires and held them together long enough for my hubby to wash our underclothes.
I’ve done the same thing.
