Paintsville drug suspects L to R DAVID SMALLWOOD, TAMMY HOUSTON, KAYLA SEWELL and DUSTIN SMALLWOOD

An active drug investigation is continuing underway after an early weekend morning raid in Paintsville revealed a cocaine & meth drug ring, leading to the arrests of three people, with the likelihood of more arrests connected to the drug case in the near future

In a police report press release by Detective Johnathan Holbrook with the Paintsville Police Department, three people were arrested just after midnight Saturday morning, December 17, in Paintsville on drug related charges.

According to Detective Holbrook,  Paintsville Police received a tip concerning drug activity on 8th Street at the Highlands Apartments, Apt. 115. When officers arrived at the apartment, they knocked on the door and were met by the renter.

After talking to the renter, the Officers were granted consent to search the apartment. Upon investigation, officers found a bag with crystal meth in a back bedroom. In another bedroom under a dresser, officers located white powdery substance along with a smoking pipe and baggies, as well as scales, more baggies and crystal meth beside the dresser. Two women and a man who were in the apartments were taken into custody. Those three arrested at the scene were:

David Smallwood, 47, and Tammy Houston, 48, both of Paintsville, and Kayla Sewell, 26, from Harrodsburg, Kentucky, which is in Mercer County, were each charged with: Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 1st Offence (4 grams or greater of Cocaine), Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 1st Offence (2 grams or greater of Methamphetamine) and Drug Paraphernalia (Buy/Possess). Police also found $700 in cash. All 3 were lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. Assisting Detective Johnathan Holbrook at the scene were Painstville police patrol officers Zack Stapleton and Keith Maynard.

Detective Holbrook stated more arrests are pending involving evidence from the drug raid.

David Smallwood remains jailed at the BSRDC as of Wednesday afternoon, while both of the two women who were arrested have since bonded out.

This particular drug case is reportedly connected to a drug arrest earlier this month, in which a relative of David Smallwood, (possibly his son). That arrest case also involved Detective Johnathan Holbrook of the Paintsville Police Department.

On December 9, Dustin Smallwood, 24, of Nicholasville, Kentucky,(which is in Jessamine County), was arrested by Detective Holbrook, and was charged with: • TRAFFICKING IN CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, 1ST DEGREE, 1ST OFFENSE – (> OR = 2 GRAMS METHAMPHETAMINE), • RESISTING ARREST, • DRUG PARAPHERNALIA – BUY/POSSESS, • SERVING PAROLE VIOLATION WARRANT.
