Heritage Harvest Tour
What an amazing way to dig deep into the culture of Eastern Ky. than a self- guided tour through the working farms, crafters, bakers, sorghum makers, hay rides, corn mazes and more.
This year’s Heritage Harvest Tour has been expanded to a two day event with 11 stops. The stops span over two counties, Lawrence and Boyd and takes you down Rt. 23 (Country Music Highway) and Rt. 3 a more rural scenery.
The driving tour will be from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, September 24 and 1 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, September 25. The tour begins on Ky. Rt. 3 from Cannonsburg to Louisa, then up US 23 to Catlettsburg, or its left up to your preference on where and what you want to visit.
Along the way participants will be able to partake in a country breakfast, visit operating farms, purchase homemade quilts and other goods and even watch apple butter and sorghum being made. Although the majority of the tour is free of charge, there are two stops that charge an admission fee, The Wolfpen Woods and Kentucky Roots.
If you want to take a day or two to learn more about our Eastern Ky. way of life and the beauty of the Fall scenery, the 11 stops will be:
* The Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church in Rush, Ky. where a breakfast for the charge of $8. will be provided from 7am to 2 pm. On Saturday and also crafts for sale.
* AJM Family Farm in Rush, Ky. They will have homemade goods and pumpkins for sale, they also have games planned.
* Broken Arrow Archery, they will have archery demonstrations and skills used to survive early Appalachia,
* Garrett Chapel UMC, the 1896 Church will be available on Saturday only with a scarecrow village, soup bean dinner from 10:30 to 4 pm. And will have apple pies for sale.
* 4 Got N Tymes, This farm offers pumpkins, mums, fall décor and homemade jams and jellies.
* Savage Farms, is a country store with fresh products such as maple syrup, maple butter, soaps, sorghum and more.
* Kentucky Roots, is an 1800’s farmstead that will make a great tour on Saturday, showing antiques and seasonal items, Kentucky Proud products and local art. Admission is $3.00. You can make your own cornhusk wreath for an additional fee.
* Savage Memorial Church, will offer a bbq lunch for $7. On Saturday, and services will be at 9:30 am on Sunday.
* Farmhouse Memories, Louisa is a restored farmhouse where you can shop for crafts and antiques. Apple butter will be made on Saturday and fresh bread and fall décor will be for sale.
* Catalpa Freewill Baptist Church, will have a chicken and dumpling meal for sale on Saturday for $6. And dessert for $1. Heritage quilts will be on display and locally made items for sale.
* Durbin Farms, Catlettsburg where the Ross Family will be making their award winning sorghum and apple butter on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Harvest Tour is in the 7th year and sponsored primarily by the Lawrence and Boyd County extension offices.
Even though the tour has expanded some this year, The Lazer has received several messages from vendors in hopes that the tour will expand even more to other routes so that other farms could have the opportunity to show what they have as well.
When we contacted the Lawrence Co. Extension Office about the idea of more expansion, Laura Opell had the following to say:
“… We are expanding and growing every year. The tour welcomes all interested farms, churches, and other stops to apply to be on the tour. There are guidelines and criteria that are used to decide which stops will be on the tour every year. These guidelines were created to continue the wonderful reputation that the Harvest Tour has made for itself,” Ms. Opell said.
