Costs of new safety measures will have to be “cobbled” together, Hogan says
In the past 10 days the massacre at a Florida high school where 17 students and teachers were killed by a mentally deranged person using an AK-15 automatic weapon, other schools across the nation have been prompted to make plans to strengthen school safety.
Lawrence County is no different.
The high school was hit with two threats in one day last week and local law enforcement and other service personnel did a good job in easing the fears of parents in Lawrence Co.
Similar threats have been reported nationwide and particularly in eastern Ky.
At a time when school budgets are tight and hiring an extra school patrolman/woman is a big step for local schools, both Lawrence Coun ty Schools and Lawrence County local government are trying to squeeze enough funding to place a service offgicer at LCHS, ast least part time.
Here is what we received after questioning leaders about the situation on Monday:
“We are coordinating a meeting, Lawrence Co. Atty. Mike Hogan said Wednesday. “At the meeting all the input from the school will be discussed. We really need to hear from them about what they want long term.”

“After that then it’s just a matter of determining whether we have the available resources in man hours to cover their needs and if we don’t have the resources, where we can cobble the money together through various agencies to meet their needs” Hogan added.
Fletcher plans to hire service officer for LCHS
“Our local authorities (constables, city police officers, sheriff’s department officers and Kentucky State Police troopers) have collaborated to service our schools over the past week and in different capacities, Lawrence Co. Schools Supt. Dr. Rob Fletcher said. “We appreciate the time they have dedicated to our students and to their safety. Of course, all city, county, or state law enforcement officials (with the proper credentials) are welcome at any of our schools at any time of the day.”
“The LCBOE will be hiring a SRO (student resource officer) within the next couple of weeks to service our high school primarily and other schools as necessary. We will be working with local officials to find a qualified person for this position,” Fletcher said.
