Ed Haley Fiddle Festival Celebrates Old Time Music

Fiddlers and music lovers are invited to the Ed Haley Old Time Fiddle Festival Saturday, Sept.17, at the Christian Life Center on Winchester Avenue in downtown Ashland, KY.

The festival will start at 10:30 a.m. with a performance a of old time Appalachian music by award winning fiddlers, Bobby Taylor from St. Albans WV, John Harrod from Owenton, KY and Betty Vornbrock from Hillsville, VA. These performers will also judge the Fiddle Contests.

There is no entry fee for the fiddlers and no admission charge for the audience.

The Fiddle Contest will start at 12:30 p.m. Contest categories are: Youth through age 12, Teens, ages 13 to 19; Adults ages 20 to 59; and Seniors ages 60 and up. Prizes include $500 for first place in the senior and adult categories.

Contestants play two old-time tunes of their choice, and registration is from 9:30 a.m. to noon. After the four general old time music contests, there will be an Ed Haley Champion Contest where all contestants are invited to play an original Ed Haley tune.

The late Ed Haley, a fiddle player known throughout the USA, influenced generations of musicians who played the traditional fiddle music of the Appalachians.

Held in conjunction with Ashland’s Poage Landing Days, the Fiddle Festival was started and continues to be supported by members of the Ed Haley family. For more information, go to www.poagelandingdays.com or call the Fiddle contest coordinator at 606-324-5366.
