Living life with a depressing golf game, along with League Results for July 11 and 18
Have you noticed that in life your past achievements, at least the way you remember them, are much more sensational than what actually occurred?
Take my golf game as an example. When I was playing golf last century, I remember shooting remarkable (?) scores. Actually, I had a USGA official handicap to prove my skill or perhaps my lack thereof. I even had a hole in one from 145 yards hitting a pitching wedge (the same loft as today’s gap wedge). For non-golfers these lofts, grooves, grip sizes, club heads, and club lengths are a means for the club manufacturers to sell their overpriced products. This they do well, and the not so bright people like me, believe (want to believe) their advertising. I have now decided that you cannot buy a golf game. This has sent me into depression, because if I can’t purchase a golf game, I can’t acquire a golf game. This places me in a never-ending downward spiral. Isn’t that a miserable and gloomy situation to find yourself?
Now to give you an example of what I have been going through, taking Tuesday’s round as an example. I lost 5 golf balls. I scarcely ever lose a golf ball, partly because I can’t hit it far enough for it to go out of bounds. But I have overcome my lack of distance by hitting the balls sideways. If you do that consistently you can get your golf ball out of bounds. At one time I considered myself “a good putter, a good wedge player, a good iron player, and occasionally a long hitter of the driver.” This statement should be tempered by what I said in the previous paragraph of how your remembered achievements are not exactly what occurred. But now back to my story, Rodney has taken away my age advantage by changing the tees. I am supposed to hit from the front tees, but these tees are being reseeded and closed for play. This means that I must move back and hit my drive from the same tees that the golfers who hit the ball a mile and shoot under par. So what am I going to do with my golf game, or actually, my lack of a golf game?
This year my handicap has climbed 5 points since the start of the league. That is the reason that you only see my name as the author of this article. I have now decided, after rethinking this matter, giving the problem careful consideration and using all my analytical skills, that perhaps I was a bit hasty in making my decision of how to improve my golf game. There was an additional factor I did not consider – my age! Placing my age into the equation, the road to improvement, if any is possible, is actually through the purchase of new game improvement clubs. This is my only hope of curing my golfing woes. Now, I’ve reverted back to buying some new golf clubs! See how silly the game of golf is, and the players who play this game are even more ridiculous.
Since this is a league article, the readers would like to hear some news from the course, rather than hear about the state of my golf game. So here goes; you get to read about the good players.
Before delving into the scores, I want Rodney and his crew to know their work has placed Eagle Ridge in the best condition of any other course in our area. He has managed to do this although understaffed.
The round of the July 11 league was shot by Troy Hughes with a gross 2-under par of 33 on the par 35 front nine.Troy’s score was so good that he received both low gross and a tie for low net. Troy carries a zero handicap. What an excellent round of golf. This was the highlight of the evening. One other notable feat was performed by Dan Preece; he had only 9 putts for the round. Actually, the best rounds for the July 18, 2017 league (back nine par 36), was shot on the prior day as makeup scores, by Tom Copley and Troy Hughes. Tom shot a 4-under par 32, with 4 birdies, 5 pars, and 11 putts. Tom hit 6 of 9 greens in regulation. Troy, not to be out done, shot an astounding 5-under par 31 on the back nine. His round included 5 birdies, 4 pars, and 15 putts, hitting 8 of the 9 greens in regulation. Since I have been keeping score, these are the lowest gross rounds I have recorded in one session. Tom and Troy had exceptional rounds of golf. You will not find neither names in any of the scores or skills competition because the round was not played on league night. However, these gross and net scores will be used in the calculation of points and handicap.
