EAGLE RIDGE GOLF LEAGUE NEWS Bill Jackson

The regular season is over and the playoffs start on August 1

The regular season has now ended. The two-week playoff will commence Tuesday next. The final handicaps are being calculated as are the points for the seeding of the playoff series. The scheduling will be predicated on the number of points gathered throughout the year. To be eligible for the championship, all players must be in attendance for the round. No make-ups can be used.

The season has flown by. We have missed much play due to weather and other circumstances. None of the lost golf rounds have been made up. This makes the calculations for the league championship based on the least amount of play for the crowning of the champion.

This coming Tuesday we will play the back 9 and end on the front 9 the following week. This is the standard format for all league championships. The data will be furnished the Levisa Lazer after the banquet, which has not been set.

The best score of the night was turned in by Tom Copley, with a gross score of 32 which is 3 under par on the par 35 front 9. Tom had 3 birdies 6 pars and hit 3 greens in regulation. The lack of hitting greens was made up by having only 9 putts. This was an excellent round. As I have said before you will not see Tom’s name in the scores and skills competition because he did not play on a league night. However, it will be used for points and handicap.

The best round of the July 25 league night was shot by Troy Hughes with a 1 over 36 on the par 35 front nine. I, along with another old geezer who does not want to be named, had the honor of playing with Troy. Troy’s putting game was not its usual sterling self. He even had a 3 putt which may be the first he’s had this year. However, the rest of his game was right on the mark. Because of the tee repairs, to give you an idea, we played from the mid back tees on hole number 2. I had not played from this tee for many years; neither had the other geezer. We two old guys hit a driver and a 3 wood-well. Both of us were in the center of the fairway, a short iron into the green. Troy hit his drive, flew over our shots, carried over the 75-yard ravine and sand trap guarding the green, and landed 10 feet from the pin. I had never seen this shot accomplished. I’ve heard of one of two other people achieving this feat, but I never had witnessed this shot carried off (I have seen it attempted several times) that is, until Tuesday night. I was both impressed and depressed. This undoubtedly was the shot of the evening.

Another great round for the night was shot by Dean Steinbring, with a net score of 27, which is 8 under par. This score is not a record. I do believe it is the lowest or at least one of the lowest scores shot this year. Congratulations to Dean on a front 9 well played.

Now for the results of July 24. I must say it was a great night to play golf although my score did not show it.

The following are the scores:

July 25, 2017

Scores

Low Net Score (27) Dean Stinebring

Low Gross Score (36) Troy Hughes

Longest Drive (#4) Troy Hughes

Fewest Putts (9) Bill England

Skills Competition

Closest to the pin, 2nd shot (#2) Dan Preece

Longest Putt (#18) Bill Jackson

Par 3, Closest to pin (#3) Troy Hughes

Par 3, Closest to pin (#17) None

Skins Troy Hughes

Presently, we have the two players holding the lowest golf handicaps in league history. Troy Hughes and Tom Copley currently have a handicap of minus 2. Regardless of who wins the championship, these two players have set a new standard.

The 3 players having the most points going into the championship are as follows:

Charlie Curnutte 39

Bill England 37

Bill Jackson 37

Notice that two of these three players are geezers, and Charlie isn’t one of them.

The schedule will be established by seeding for night one. For the final evening, the three players with the most points after next Tuesday will be playing against one another.
