Eagle Ridge Golf League News

July 16, 2016, League Results

Bill Jackson

Tuesday was quite an eventful day at Eagle Ridge

When I arrived at the course, it was oppressively hot; the driving range was empty. As I approached the porch, I could see two people on the putting green. Others were sitting on the porch in the shade. Walking up to the group, I heard someone say, “now there is someone I will not ride in a cart with unless I drive,” pointing a finger at me. This was followed by a chorus of “me either.” Apparently, I made a lasting impression on someone, and I took this as a compliment. They could have said they wouldn’t ride in a cart with me at all.

After accepting the compliment from the outside crew, I walked into the air-conditioned pro shop, thinking this is where I need to be. Looking around, I saw Dinah and Telia talking with a distinguished looking gentleman and two well-dressed women, apparently, the gentleman’s entourage. As Telia and Dinah continuing to speak with the group, especially the women, showing them the shop and telling them of the uniqueness of Eagle Ridge, I checked in. Telia introduced me to Kentucky Park Commissioner, Don Holland. He was making a tour of the park system in Eastern Kentucky and appeared to be enjoying his trip. Eagle Ridge was the last stop of the day, and he was impressed, at least with the course and pro shop, probably less so with the rowdy league members.

We started playing on the hottest league day of the year. The temperature was high, as was the humidity. It was actually stifling. Then came the black clouds, thunder in the distance, and what appeared as an approaching storm that was going to miss us. Wrong! It started with a few drops of rain and then down it came. For about 20-minutes we sat under the shelter; the rain stopped, and we finished our round in pleasant weather, enjoying the coolness brought by the rain.

To my knowledge, we now have a new league course record with a gross score of 33, three under par, for nine holes. The score was shot by Tom Copley. This is quite an achievement on any course in the area, but for Eagle Ridge, one of the most challenging courses in Kentucky, it is quite a feat. Congratulations Tom. Although Tom shot “lights out,” I must mention Troy Hughes, who shot a 2-under par, 34. Another great round!
