Eagle Ridge Golf League News Bill Jackson

Some great rounds of golf and no chance of rain – what a difference!

Tuesday, August 14, was the first day that I can remember in over a month that there were no thunderclouds in the distance. It was a beautiful evening. And some of the scores were outstanding. With no chance of rain, the turnout of players was high. Everyone was getting in their strokes. Besides, we were playing the back 9.

Kelly Nix has been hitting good shots all year. Unfortunately, Eagle Ridge is not a course where you can stroke an errant shot without suffering the wrath of the “Golfing Gods.” Tuesday, Kelly put his entire game together and ended with a net 27. Way to go Kelly! What a great score. I must see how you managed to calm the golfing gods who oversee our course.

The league uses three tees, the #3 tee, the tee in front of the #3 tee, if any, and the #4 tee. There are two tees further back, the #1 and the #2 tees. The number #1 tee is never used, and would only be used if a professional event or perhaps the state amateur championship were held at Eagle Ridge. This makes the #2 tee the longest from which a player can hit. Everyone in the league, except Davey Fields, plays from the number #3 tee or closer. Davey is the only person I know who plays the # 2 tees. That is, except for the visitors who come on golf outings from Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio. When they finished there round, they look as though they have been flogged with a weeping willow branch, and if it is hot, their faces are extraordinarily red. I am sure whether it’s the heat, the hills, or their score, but it never ends in any other condition.

Well, I appear to become shorter and shorter from the tees with each passing year. On some holes, with my driver, I could not reach the fairway from the #2 tees. So with that background and an understanding that Davey Fields plays from the number 2 tees, Tuesday evening he shot a gross 5 under par 31. It is difficult to fathom what an impressive score this is, especially at Eagle Ridge, which has the highest slope rating of any course in the tri-state region and ranks with the highest in Kentucky. A slope rating measures the difficulty of a golf course so handicaps can be adjusted when playing other golf courses having different slopes. I actually believe that Davey’s score is a course record for the league, and I know that it is a course record from the # 2 tees. Davey, congratulations on a great round of golf.

One final comment on the scores. “Here comes da judge,” again! Our District Judge, the Hon. John Chaffin has done it once more. He did not meet his 10 putts from last week, but he did have only 12 putts, the lowest in the league for the week. Troy Hughes was 2nd with a not too shabby 13 putts. Notice that my name is nowhere to be found.

League Results from August 14.

Now for the scores and highlights for August 14.
