On October 4, 2018 the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that a wanted subject, Gary Cochran, 50 of Paintsville had been hanging out in Richardson/Peach Orchard area around Hwy 645. Acting on that information Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler and Deputy Dwayne Bowen responded to the area to look for Cochran.

Gary Cochran

After a short time Wheeler observed a vehicle matching the description of the one Cochran was said to be operating. When Wheeler turned to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle for speeding and careless operation the operator took off at a high rate of speed. Once Wheeler activated his emergency lights the vehicle failed to stop and at that time a short pursuit occurred with Cochran continuing into Martin County and going onto Hwy 2033 where the pursuit ended.

Cochran was taken into custody at that point without incident. Cochran was
found to be under the influence of methamphetamine. Crystal meth and a
loaded syringe was located inside the vehicle. Cochran was charged with
DUI 1st, Fleeing 1st Degree, No Insurance, Expired Registration Plates,
Instructional Permit Violation, Possession of Controlled Substance(Meth)
and Drug Paraphernalia.

He was also served with 2 bench warrants for prior cases.

Cochran was lodged in the Big Sandy Detention Center. Chief Deputy
Wheeler is in charge of the investigation.

They need to put him under the jail and never let him out. What if he had hit someone? All doped up, no insurance, nothing.
