Fleming Co. 29, Lawrence County 22

LC Quarterback #5 Noah West looking to handoff vs Fleming Co. on Friday night in the opening round of the playoffs

Flemingsburg, Ky. —  In a game that came down to the wire it was Fleming Co. ( 8-3 ) that made the play when it counted in a 29-22 victory over a valiant Lawrence Co. ( 4-7 ) team that gave the Panthers all they wanted and then some in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs on Friday night. This was the first opening round loss for the Dawgs since 2008.

The Dawgs got rushing touchdowns and conversion runs from Trevor Young and Noah West to build a 16-7 lead before Fleming Co. came storming back to take 21-16 advantage going into halftime.

The Dawgs defense stopped the Panthers late in the fourth quarter inside the five yard line and drove the ball to midfield when Jordan Johnson raced in from 50 yards out to give the Bulldogs the 22-21 lead with 2:46 to go in the ball game.

All the Dawg defense needed was one stop and they would live to play another day.

On the ensuing kickoff Fleming Co. took the ball downfield and moved it inside the 10 yard line with 14.3 seconds left when FC Quarterback Josh Crump found Zac Alexander for the game winning touchdown pass and stunned the Bulldog faithful that made the trek to Flemingsburg.

The Panthers tacked on the two point conversion to make it 29-22 before a last ditch effort from LC was intercepted to end the ballgame and the Bulldogs season.

Caleb Fletcher came up huge on defense for the Dawgs with an interception and blocked extra point.

The LC offense fumbled three times in the red zone to kill scoring chances.

The Bulldogs will miss the seven seniors on this team but return a ton of players that gained valuable experience this season.

Fleming Co. will travel to Pond Creek next Friday night to take on Belfry ( 10-1 ) who were 50-0 winners over Bath Co. last night.

Lawrence Co. Head Coach Alan Short

COACH’S COMMENT

“… It was a hard loss and will be tough to say goodbye to those seniors, but I feel that we have nothing to hang our heads about.”  I felt the kids battled all night and gave themselves a chance to win at the end.”

” Very excited about the future. I feel like we learned how to compete this year. Now we have to learn how to finish and win.”
