Raceland, Ky. — Four quarters weren’t enough as Lawrence Co. ( 7-3 ) came up just short 21-20 in overtime against Raceland ( 9-1 ) on Friday in the regular season finale for both teams.
Lawrence Co. finished the regular season with a 7-3 record.
In a game with two high octane offenses, both teams were outstanding on the defensive side of the ball. Both teams were held well below their season averages in a whale of a ballgame to end the regular season and gear up for a playoff run.
With 1:15 left in the first quarter Dougie Hall burst through a big hole and went 35 yards to open the scoring, Logan Southers added the PAT and it was 7-0 Dawgs.
Dougie Hall was the leading rusher against Raceland.
That would also be your halftime score with both teams around the 100 mark of total offense.
The Rams tied the score on a Logan Lundy 7 yard scamper and Peyton Isom added the PAT with 7:29 left in the third period.
Raceland took the lead when Lundy hit James Farrow for a 5 yard touchdown and Isom made it 14-7 just six seconds into the fourth quarter.
With 4:04 left in the fourth quarter Blue Fletcher bullied his way into the end zone from 21 yards out and Southers tacked on the extra point to make it 14-14.
With both teams getting a crack on offense in the overtime session from the 10 yard line Lawrence Co. scored on a Dylan Ferguson 10 yard touchdown run but the Southers point after was blocked and it was 20-14.
Lundy scored from two yards out and Isom batted the extra point and the Rams won the thriller 21-20.
The Dawgs will open up the Class 3A playoffs at home against Magoffin Co. on Friday night, the two teams met in Louisa on September 17th with Lawrence Co. winning 43-14.
Raceland will host Fairview ( 0-10 ) in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs next Friday. The Rams won the regular meeting 72-8 on October 15th.

“… What a great high school football game last night. Tough loss for us. We are very proud of our kids, we battled all night, we have nothing to hang our heads about, but we are past the point of moral victories in our program. Not going to pretend that this one doesn’t hurt. We are going to let it hurt today and turn the page to Magoffin County tomorrow.”
“… Offensively we were able to move the ball particularly early. They brought different pressures in the 2nd half the caused us some problems, but we were able to settle down and put together a drive. Blue Fletcher’s run to tie the game was one of the best runs I have seen. Doug Hall and Dylan Ferguson both had really solid games. The field conditions limited both teams ability to throw the ball.”
“… Defensively we continued to make plays. Raceland is a very good offensive team that can stress opposing defenses, we did a great job at bending but not breaking. Caden Ball, Talan Pollack, and Cody Crum were all over the field. Alex Strickland came up with a big take away that allowed us to get back into the game.”

There was not a point after kick at all. So, there was no blocked kick
The LC coach should have played for the win and not overtime. There was plenty of time on the clock in the 4th quarter and with two time outs remaining he should have managed the clock and tried to score. Our offense was moving the ball well and it was like he just gave up on winning during regulation time.
