Lawrence County High School Students Go One on One with Technology

Lenovo N23 model will be used at LCHS.

LOUISA – A recent purchase by the Lawrence County Board of Education will put CHROMEBOOK DEVICES in the hands of all students at Lawrence County High School.

“Research shows positive results for student learning in schools where each student uses a ChromeBook, tablet, or laptop regularly during the school day.  Technology is such a big part of our world today, and success in the workforce requires people to be proficient in using technology.  This initiative will better prepare our students to compete in today’s college and career settings,” Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher said of the initiative.

In an article published in Education Week, a Michigan State professor summed up the conclusions of a recent study on the effectiveness of one-to-one device programs in public education.

“It’s not like just providing a laptop to every student will automatically increase student achievement, but we find that it’s the first step,” said Binbin Zheng, an assistant professor of counseling, educational psychology, and special education at Michigan State University.

Using statistical techniques to analyze already-completed studies, Zheng and her colleagues found that 1-to-1 laptop programs, on average, had a statistically significant positive impact on student test scores in English/language arts, writing, math, and science. “The limited number of rigorous quantitative studies available to analyze means that further analysis is warranted, but the findings are clearly a good sign for 1-to-1 proponents,” Zheng said.

LC Supt. Dr. Rob Fletcher and LCHS principal Christy MooreLawrence County High School Principal Christy Moore is excited about the program.

“We at LCHS are very excited about the one to one technology initiative, Mrs. Moore said.  “This is a wonderful opportunity for all students; technology is obviously a key in the future of our students and we want to make the most of this opportunity.”

Thomas Burns, Information and Technology Officer for Lawrence County Schools, likes the increased access for students to the world of information.
