My name is Liza Dixon and I am from Ashland Kentucky. 3 years ago I started a personal project in my living room with my husband to collect items for soldiers deployed overseas.
Our first year goal was 10 care packages and we ended up sending 204 boxes overseas.
Our second year I wanted to double that amount and we were able to send 419 boxes.
This year we want to beat last year’s amount but being from a small town, it is difficult to get awareness up and get people involved. Shipping costs alone are over $5,000. I do every news interview, news article, public appearance that I can. We do all the fundraising for shipping costs, we put out all the donation boxes into our community and do all the pickups from the drop off locations. We host a box packing event for the community to come and be involved in.
This has become such a passion to me and I enjoy it every year we do it. We have received communication back from troops overseas and their gratitude for the smallest things we send, make me know I am doing right by them.
I work 2 jobs and run this project 4-5 months out of the year. I give everything I have to make this project a success and I will continue to do so for as long as I possibly can. I am trying to spread the word as far and wide about this as I can to raise awareness so that our deployed service men and women know that they aren’t forgotten and that they are appreciated from back home. I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a story on this project to help raise awareness? Thanks so much for your consideration!
