BSCTC BRINGS HOME 37 STATE SKILLS-USA AWARDS

Big Sandy Community and Technical College brought home 37 awards in the Kentucky SkillsUSA competition on Saturday, April 22 in Louisville.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s (BSCTC) SkillsUSA chapter brought home 37 awards in the SkillsUSA state competition in Louisville on Saturday, April 22.

“We are extremely proud of our students and their commitment to their trades,” said Dr. Alan Scheibmeir, interim president of BSCTC. “This is an amazing accomplishment for our college, and it speaks to the quality of our programming in our career education programs.”

Of the 37 awards, BSCTC racked up 21 first-place awards and was the recipient of second place for post-secondary membership.

The following students brought home first-place honors: Amy Romans, Ad Design; Beth Runyon, Photography; Brandon Gortney, Auto Tech 1; Brandon Sparks, Job Interview; Bryan Prince, Extemporaneous Speaking and Welding Fabrication Team; Chase Keen, Welding; Courtland Cool, Construction Tool Identification; Dakota Morris, Welding Fabrication Team; Dakylan Costello, Techical CADD Drafting; Daniel Music, Welding Fabrication Team; Haley Johnson, Architectural CADD Drafting; Harley Young, Welding 1; Jeffrey Goble, Job Demo; Jerry Daniels, T-Shirt Design; Johnathan MacGyver Holbrook, Welding Art Sculpture, McKayla Jude, Prepared Speech, Michael Husted, Job Skills Demo; Neal Horne, Promotional Bulletin Board Team; Steven Schmidt, Promotional Bulletin Board Team; and Tyler Rice, Promotional Bulletin Board Team.

Second-place winners were: Austin Bethea, Related Technical Math; Bart Horne, Welding; Christopher Hamilton, Job Skills Demo; Colby Stanley, Prepared Speech; David Dye, Job Skills Demo; Eugene McClure, Industrial Motor Control; Jackie King, Electrical Construction Wiring; J.D. McClure, Construction Tool Identification; Kimmy Horsely, Web Design Team; and Steven Schmidt Web Design Team.

Third-place winners were: Angel Reffett, Web Design Team; Brandon Sparks, Carpentry; Christopher Hamilton, Web Design Team; and Michael Husted Diesel Technology.

All first-place winners will advance to the National SkillsUSA competition to be held next month in Louisville.

Dr. Fallon Watson, assistant professor of communication and SkillsUSA sponsor at BSCTC, said she is proud of the college’s performance at the competition.

“This validates our students are among the best, and some of them will get to compete for the title of the best in the nation in their respective area at the national competition,” she said. “This is a tremendous honor for our students, our college and our communities.”
