ALLEGED BILLION DOLLAR ARSONIST: RYAN SAWYER MAYS, 20, OF ASHLAND, KY; WHO WAS IDENTIFIED AUGUST 3, AFTER BEING CHARGED LAST, AS HE IS ACCUSED OF STARTING A FIRE THAT DESTROYED ONE THE LARGEST U.S.NAVY WARSHIPS.
A sailor charged last week with starting a fire that destroyed one of the largest U.S. Navy warships’ the USS Bonhomme Richard, is from Boyd County, Kentucky.
Ryan Sawyer Mays, 20, of Ashland, Kentucky; was confirmed by his attorney, Gary Barthel, with the Military Law Center in San Diego, confirmed in a statement to Lexington television station WKYT, as being the sailor charged in federal court documents by the U.S. Navy on Thursday,July 29, with starting a fire on July 12, 2020, that destroyed the USS Bonhomme Richard, a $1.2 billion dollar warship, while it was docked off San Diego, marking the maritime branch’s worst warship blaze outside of combat in recent memory.
Before his name was publicly identified, Ryan Sawyer Mays was a member of the ship’s crew at the time, according to Commodore Sean Robertson, a U.S. 3rd Fleet spokesperson, said in a statement last week.
Ryan Sawyer Mays was charged with aggravated arson and the willful hazarding of a vessel, Robertson said, whose name had yet to be released.
The Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) was one of only 10 amphibious assault ships, which are among the few in the U.S. fleet that can act as a mini aircraft carrier. It typically had a crew of just over 1,100; and can carry, depending on the any of several missions type, of 22 to 30 aircraft, and it could transport up to just over 2,000 marines and their equipment, by both helicopters and MV-22B, as well as multiple sea beach landing craft.

The Bonhomme Richard had been nearing the end of a two-year upgrade estimated to cost $250 million when the fire broke out on July 12, 2020.
The amphibious assault ship fire burned for more than four days. About 160 sailors and officers were on board, and more than 60 sailors and civilians were treated for minor injuries, heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, according to the Associated Press.
The fire started in the ship’s lower storage area, where cardboard boxes, rags and other maintenance supplies were stored. But winds coming off the San Diego Bay whipped up the flames and the flames spread up the elevator shafts and exhaust stacks.
Then two explosions, one heard as far as 13 miles (21 kilometers) away, caused it to grow even bigger.
At the most dangerous highpoint of the blaze, the flames came within two floor decks of the aircraft fuel tank storage, which at that time was around one million gallons fuel.
Ryan Sawyer Mays, Gary Barthel says his client “always enjoyed being in the Navy and making it a career” and adds Mays has “consistently denied the allegations and continues to do so.”
But according to the 33-page affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of California on Sept. 3, 2020.Ryan Sawyer Mays, who had the rank of Seaman Apprentice, had previously dropped out of training to become a Navy SEAL after only five days and held a grudge against the service, according to an affidavit filed by an investigator seeking a search warrant in the case.
Ryan Sawyer Mays was arrested on August 20, 2020, the affidavit says. Gary Barthel previously told Military.com that Mr. Mays was confined to the Marine Corps Station Miramar, California, brig for several months late last year before being released.
Gary Barthel told Military.com in a previous interview that Ryan Sawyer Mays is not locked in the brig and is “performing his duties on a daily basis.”
Navy records show that Mr. Mays currently is stationed at Amphibious Squadron 5 in San Diego.
