LOUISA – January is Board of Education Recognition month and it could not have been timed better for the re-scheduled meeting of the Lawrence County Board of Education regular meeting on Thursday at Lawrence County High School.

The veteran members unanimously approved D. Heath Preston to continue as the chairman of the board as he has in recent years and Garnett Scaggs as vice-chair.  Members of the board – Preston, Skaggs, Maddlene Roberts, Jim See, and Barbara Robinson – were recognized for their service to the citizens and students of Lawrence County.

Preston has served six years, Skaggs for nine years on the board, Roberts for ten years, See for 12 years, and Robinson for 22.

The board accepted a donation from and recognized a partnership with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) from Morehead State University in order to provide professional development in health and curricular materials for grades 3-8 in the amounts of $4,535.87 for materials and a value of $7,000 for the professional development. Teresa Judd and Justin Slone of RSVP at MSU were in attendance and spoke about the partnership with LC being the first of its kind with the program.

The district calendar was updated with the final date of attendance as of the meeting reflected as May 15 pending any other official school closings.

Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher informed the board and attendees of progress on the district facilities plan, a scheduled SIG distance monitoring visit, planned attendance at the Kentucky School Boards Association Annual Conference March 2-4, and an outlook of the governor’s budget proposal, which includes massive cuts in education.

Additionally, Fletcher’s employment contract as superintendent was renewed by unanimous vote. Fletcher was last listed as making $108,000 per year plus expenses.

“I can honestly say that coming to Lawrence County to be superintendent has been the best professional decision I ever made. The way the students and people of Lawrence County have embraced me and my family has made me a Lawrence Countian and it has been an honor to serve here,” Fletcher state.

Chairman Preston noted Fletcher’s service and the progress made over the first term as superintendent and pointed out that he declined any raise that would not also be given to teachers.

“He made it clear that if teachers weren’t getting raises at this point then he shouldn’t. He will be treated in line with them and will get a raise if they do,” said Preston.

The next regular scheduled meeting is set for February 19 at LCHS in the library at 6 p.m.
