Bluegrass Institute highlights Amendment 2 language, answers to frequently asked school-choice questions

FRANKFORT – In an ongoing effort to inform Kentucky voters about education choice, including Amendment 2 on this fall’s ballot, the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions, Kentucky’s free-market think tank, has released a Frequently Asked Questions brief than can be easily downloaded, printed and shared. A longer analysis also is available for those seeking more detailed information.

“Kentuckians deserve to know the truth about school choice,” said Bluegrass Institute President Jim Waters. “We intend to help them cut through the myths and misinformation pushed by opponents of education freedom. This analysis offers clear, understandable answers to many of the most important aspects of school choice.”

The FAQ brief includes the language of the proposed constitutional amendment that voters will see on the ballot this fall. Amendment 2 removes barriers, allowing legislators to consider school choice legislation in the future by clarifying that Kentucky’s Constitution permits funding mechanisms to assist parents in giving their children a better education.

The FAQ brief addresses 16 different questions related to the amendment and school choice policies, including:

  • Why do we need alternatives to the traditional public schooling system?
  • Shouldn’t we just increase public school funding?
  • How effective are school choice programs?
  • Are school choice and charter schools viable options in rural areas?
  • Is school choice a “giveaway” to private schools, allowing “using public money for private schools?”

“We believe voters armed with the information provided by this educational tool will back Amendment 2,” Waters added. “That support will open the door to empowering Kentucky parents with the same kind of freedom available to families in most other states to choose the school that best fits their child.”

Nothing about busing the kids to school and back home. It will hurt the poor kids the most
you will see investors running these schools to chase those tax dollars.
