ARC urges focus on co-occurring conditions during Mental Illness Awareness Week

LOUISA, Ky. (Oct. 7, 2024) — Kentucky’s leading treatment provider Addiction Recovery Care (ARC) is shining a spotlight on the connection between addiction and co-occurring and mental health challenges during National Mental Illness Awareness Week (Oct. 6-12).

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), more than 25% of adults living with serious mental health problems also have a substance use problem. Substance use disorders (SUD) occur more frequently with certain mental health problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and personality disorder.

To help better address co-occurring health conditions, ARC opened its first inpatient psychiatric hospital late last year — Bellefonte Hospital & Recovery Center in Greenup County. This facility provides the most comprehensive services available to improve and sustain physical and mental health as patients navigate treatment for SUD.

“We understand that individuals who are struggling with both addiction and mental illness need a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses both challenges,” said ARC Vice President of Marketing Vanessa Keeton. “ARC’s holistic approach to treatment empowers our clients to find healing from behavioral and mental health disorders while they recover from SUD — equipping them with the best opportunity for successful long-term recovery.”

SAMHSA identifies several reasons why mental health problems and substance use disorders sometimes occur together. These include:

  • Certain substances can cause people with an addiction to experience one or more symptoms of a mental health problem.
  • Mental health problems can sometimes lead to alcohol or drug use, as some people with a mental health problem may misuse these substances as a form of self-medication.
  • Mental health and substance use disorders share some underlying causes, including changes in brain composition, genetic vulnerabilities and early exposure to stress or trauma.

ARC’s comprehensive approach to addiction treatment includes a full continuum of care, including detox, residential, transitional, intensive outpatient, outpatient, medically assisted treatment (MAT), vocational rehabilitation, and job training.
