ACTC Offers Non-credit Classes and Training
What would you like to learn? The Workforce Solutions Department at Ashland Community and Technical College is now planning next year’s schedule, and your class request can be included.
“We wear many hats to serve individuals and businesses in the community,” said Karen Coburn, Director of Workforce Solutions.
The Department offers a full spectrum of workforce education and development services for businesses, continuing education for professionals, short term health certificate programs and community education for individuals.
Professional development classes can include state mandated Continuing Education, license and exam preparation, and updates/training for professional groups. Free classes for early child care employees will be continued this fall, and there will be two classes on legal issues for human recourse professionals.
“Fiber optics training will be offered later this fall, and we are working with Morehead State University to develop Continuing Education courses for social work professionals by spring,” Coburn said. In addition, commercial driver’s license training and short term certificate programs in Kentucky Medication Aide, State Registered Nurse Aide and Phlebotomy are available.
Community Education classes for adults can include personal interests and work skills, and youth classes can explore new subjects and interests.
Classes can also be tailored to meet the needs of employers and organizations. Possible soft skills include leadership, marketing, team building, hiring and firing, preventing sexual harassment and time management. Training can be online or face-to-face on site or at one of our three campuses.

Electrical License Exam Prep
Get ready for the Kentucky Electrical Journeyman License Exam with a Saturday class at ACTC
The class is designed for people who have the hours and experience necessary to take the test but who want a refresher course before taking the exam. Test-takers need to have six years of work experience or four years of work experience plus at least 576 hours of classroom training from an approved training agency program.
The class is a mixture of lecture and hands-on exercises, and students can take a practice exam.
The class meets six Saturdays, Sept. 10 to Oct. 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Roberts Drive Campus. The $279 fee includes a workbook, and participants should bring their latest edition of the International Building Code.
Class for Dental Hygienists
Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office, a continuing education class for dental hygienists, will be held Friday, Oct. 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.at the College Drive Campus. The class is approved by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry for three hours of Category B continuing education.
The instructor is Keith Brammell, DMD, ACTC’s Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and the fee is $59. To register and pay by credit/debit card, call Workforce Solutions: 606.326.2130 or email: as_workforce@kctcs.edu.
Driving Instruction
Teens and adults can prepare for the road with ACTC’s Driving Instruction Class. Those who complete the class may be eligible for reduced auto insurance rates.
The two-session class is scheduled twice this fall: Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3 and 4 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 5 and 6. Each class meets from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Roberts Drive Campus.

ACT Preparation
High school students can get ready for the ACT college entrance test in a 16-hour Prep class. The class is designed to help overcome test anxiety and improve test-taking skills. Participants will go over ACT type questions, learn test-taking tips, review English grammar and punctuation and practice working arithmetic and geometry problems.
The class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 13 to Oct. 20, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Roberts Drive Campus. The fee is $99, and students will need to purchase Baron’s Preparation for the ACT.
QuickBooks Class
Do you need to use QuickBooks for your small business? ACTC will help you get started with a class held Thursdays, Sept. 22 to Oct. 13, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Participants will learn how to set up a Quickbooks company, adjust the Quickbooks chart of accounts, reconcile balance sheet accounts,, receive payments, make bank deposits, enter bills, pay bills and write checks. The class will be taught by Laynette Pemberton, a certified Quickbooks instructor with 18 years of experience, and the fee is $89.
