Deadline to apply for fall semester is July 31
July 31 is the deadline to apply for fall semester classes, which begin on Aug. 14, at Ashland Community and Technical College.
Applications for admission are available on the web at ashland.kctcs.edu and may be submitted online or by mail to the admissions office at the College Drive Campus or the Technology Drive Campus. Applicants will also need to submit an official copy of their high school diploma or GED transcript, transcripts from other colleges or universities attended and ACT scores if available.
New students should also apply for financial aid as soon as possible. The Federal Pell Grant and other forms of aid are available to those who qualify on the basis of financial need, and many ACTC students qualify. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the only form required for most federal and state aid programs, is online at fafsa.gov

Dental assisting deadline extended
ACTC’s newest program, dental assisting, has extended its application deadline to Oct. 13.
The dental assisting program prepares students to provide services such as assisting the dentist with operative and surgical procedures, manipulation of dental materials, taking radiographs, providing oral health instructions and performing office management tasks. Upon completion of the 12-month program, students will be awarded a Diploma in Dental Assisting. Graduates will also be certified in radiation health and safety, coronal polishing and expanded duties (lab competency).
To apply for the selective admissions program, students must complete either basic anatomy and physiology with a lab or human anatomy and physiology I with a grade of C or better.
Both of those biology courses are offered this fall semester, which begins on Aug. 14.
Students will also need to submit both an ACTC application and a dental assisting program application. Admission requirements include COMPASS/ACT scores, GPA, prerequisite courses and CPR certification. Other requirements are listed online, along with applications, at ashland.kctcs.edu under Academics, Programs of Study.
Also, students interested in dental assisting may qualify for free tuition through the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship. The scholarship is offered to qualifying students in the fields of in health care, advanced manufacturing, transportation/logistics, business services/information technology and construction/trades.
At ACTC, students can chose from dozens of programs in those five fields, from computer aided drafting and design, computerized manufacturing and machining and lineman to pharmacy technology, medical technology and accounting.
Information about all programs eligible for the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship can be found at workreadykentucky.com. The scholarship will be administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) and students must file a Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA) and submit an ACTC application before applying for the WRKS. The FAFSA form is available at www.fafsa.gov and the WRKS application can be found at www.kheaa.com.

ACTC Photography Classes
ACTC is offering classes taught by J. Bird Cremeans, a local photographer and experienced Photoshop instructor. Classes are from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Roberts Drive Campus.
Intro to Photography is designed for beginners and hobbyists and will meet on Wednesday evenings starting Aug. 30-Oct. 4. Participants will get one-on-one instruction, notes and assignments to learn how to use their cameras’ settings. The fee is $75.
Intro to Photography 2 will meet on Tuesdays, Aug. 29-Oct. 3, and will cover advanced features and techniques such as EV and flash compensation, advanced white balance and metering, and other manual settings. A camera with manual functions is recommended. The fee is $75.
Intro to Photoshop class will meet on Mondays, Aug. 28-Oct. 9, excluding Labor Day. The class is designed for anyone interested in photography, graphic design, photo restoration or digital scrapbooking. The fee is $85.

Electrical license prep class
Are you ready to sit for the Kentucky state electrical exam? Do you have the hours and experience necessary to take the test but aren’t sure if you’re really prepared? Have you taken the exam before without passing? Do you need a refresher course in the basics of electricity? If so, register for the Kentucky Electrical License Exam Preparation class.
The six-week class is led by licensed master electrician Lennis Adkins, who has more than 40 years of electrical experience. The class begins on Sept. 9 and will be from 8 a.m.-noon each Saturday through Oct. 14 at the Roberts Drive Campus, for a total of 24 contact hours. Students will have the opportunity to take a practice exam.
After the class, students are encouraged to register to take the actual exam facilitated by ACTC.
Tuition for the class is $299 per person and includes the required workbook.

Driving course
Do you need some practice on the road before taking your first drivers’ test? Or do you already have a license, but want to hone your driving skills?
Ashland Community and Technical College is offering a driving instruction course that will help both teens and adults prepare for the road.
Taught by Boyd County Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Riffe, students will learn good driving skills through the use of up-to-date information and on-the-road driving practice. Completion of the program may also help reduce auto insurance rates. While the driving portion of the class will cover Boyd County’s driving course in Catlettsburg, residents of other counties are welcome to register.
Participants must have a valid driver’s permit or license and must be prepared to attend all class sessions as scheduled. Sessions are scheduled on weekday evenings or Saturdays on a first-come basis. Cost for the course is $225 and seats are limited.
