Those interested in running for office got an extra 18 days to sign up according to Lawrence County Clerk Chris Jobe.
“They passed it last night,” Jobe said today around 2:00. “Our offices are closed today because of the storm but since the legislature extended the fling deadline it won’t matter as much.”
To date Lawrence County has fewer candidates than any time in recent memory with offices like sheriff, clerk, PVA, and two magistrate incumbents with no opposition in the Primary. Only one Democrat candidate has registered for county races.
In the state senate Phillip Wheeler will continue to represent Lawrence Co. and most of his present district, but will lose Morgan County in the new plan which is expected to pass next week with a GOP majority in both houses.
Rep. Patrick Flannery will lose Lawrence County which will be part of a district with Cattlettsburg and Cannonsburg in Boyd County. Presently, Rep. Scott Sharpe, R., is the representative for the part of Boyd County being added with Lawrence County to form a new district.
Jobe said he has not heard of any candidate from Lawrence County that would run for the new position. Former state representative Kathy Hinkle (D.-Louisa), who was beaten by Flannery in the general election last year, could not be reached for comment on whether she will run.
