I Was in Addiction…

A 12-Week Series on Addiction and Recovery  (Part 2 of 12)

By: Matt Brown, ARC’s Senior Vice President of Administration

What is Addiction?

Addiction is one of the least understood and most complex diseases known to man. Simply put:

An addiction is an urge to do something that is hard to control or stop.

When someone becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol, their brain chemistry and addictive behaviors drive them to continue to use drugs and alcohol despite negative consequences. Once in addiction, people become very ill when they try to stop using.

I spent 18 years in addiction and tried very hard to stop using for at least the last 10 years of that time.

I was finally able to stop using when I went to residential treatment at Addiction Recovery Care. They helped me learn how to live life without drugs and alcohol and identify why I started using in the first place. To deal with these things, they taught me healthy coping mechanisms.

The good news is that today there are many types of treatment available. Next week we will talk about those options and how to help your loved one find the treatment they need.

If you or someone you know is in need of help for an addiction, please call 855.590.0286 or visit arccenters.com to use our confidential online chat feature. Hope and help are just a call or click away.
